Gamers are "likely" drunks and druggies

Image

A US study has found that people who play games regularly are more likely to take drugs and drink alcohol than normal people. They could have saved a lot of time and money by just asking us though.

    • This just in! People who watch movies are "likely" drunks and druggies!

also, people who use computers are "likely" drunks and druggies!

oh and a new study shows that people who drink soda are "likely" drunks and druggies!!

This is the stupidest article I have ever read. Just more anti gamer propaganda from the people who forgot that when they were young adults, they were "likely" drunks and druggies for listening to Led Zepplin and other rock n roll. If you look at ANY group of people in the US you can make the claim that they are likely drunks and druggies.

Whats really amazing about this article is that the "study" was conducted at a college among a mere 800 students....so wake up, COLLEGE STUDENTS ARE "LIKELY" TO BE DRUNKS AND DRUGGIES!

Ive worked in the games industry (so its the most hardcore of the hardcore) and most of them drink exactly the same as my non gaming friends and actually do significantly less drugs.

    • Well i can say that i do have that social akwardness and so does my little brother. And we do play alot of video games...but to that extent...i don't smoke or drink at all so this is utter bull...

Even if it is...Whenever i have the chance...i get him out of the house to expierience "social" activity. As for this article...It depends on how he/she reacts.

    • obviously this survey is scientifically shaky. It doesn't make any sense that video games or drugs would cause you to start engaging in the other.

What does makes sense is that video games are played usually by people who are fairly young (usually under 30 but of course not always) and the majority of drug users are young as well. common fucking sense.

the article is deceptive because it suggests there's a link between the two beyond having roughly the same audience.

now where did my bong and my controller go?

    • Cannabis and video games is like Peanut butter and jelly.

They were made for each other.

Most of the guys who developed the earliest Atari video game system where BAKED out of their skulls the entire time.

The FIRST arcade game ever was marketed where????
      IN BARS!!!!!!

I thought everyone already knew there was a link here.

    • Like anything in life, remember to practice moderation. Whether its games, drinking, pot, or other drugs, set and setting are vitally important.
      Like a previous comment stated,

"They required gulf war sorty pilots to take amphetamines. They confirm that meth wins games.
But publicly they proclaim "speed kills"."

Its true: speed helps kill the enemy.
Its also true that sometimes people who play games 40 hours a week are losers. Its also true that some people who drink to much have a problem with addiction.

      Remember: SET AND SETTING
      :)

    • Not true. I'm a hardcore gamer and I don't get drunk and do drugs. I do occasionally drink during social events but not like this article portrays.

I want to look at their margin of error. Give me the stats! I already found a flaw in this study/ article. The 800 surveyed gamers are in college. Did these "professors" not put in mind that college students drink and party in general?

They need to re-do their study.

    • what a load of crap... i have been gaming for over 23 years now... started when i was 5. i do not have a drinking or drug problem. can not afford to, nor do I need it to enjoy myself, I do not have an issue with responsible use of organic substances.
i have a collage diploma and a university degree. i work full time and play 4 to 5 hours of games at night. still am i addicted to video games damn skippy, and i know it.

it does not hinder my ability to hit the gym every day for an hour, it does not hinder my ability to go have fun doing other things... but when you come home at night, it is nice to just sit down and shut down while you have fun taking out the days frustrations on pixels. makes getting up and going to day the next work and smiling at that jack*#@ across the hall that much easier.

I was referring to the ''coincidential''? stereotype of my people and their association with drugs...Why could'nt it have been two japanese kids, considering that many a japanese youth are obsessed with Video games...Or two ''white kids''? I just don't like the obvious implication.....not that I would prefer it be another race stamped with the implication , I just would prefer the image had been something neutral maybe, like a video console perhaps, with drugs strewn around it? considering the article is including all gamers, I assumed that included all races!!! Right?.....

    • Hmm, how should I phrase this? Horseshit. Another "study" done with zero information on how it was conducted. I've played video games for years and drink only lightly and definitely don't take drugs. This is also true of my friends who play video games. If they want to REALLY want to examine negative aspects of gaming I suggest they go to Vegas and interview some of those folks.

    • you know there are lies damn lies .. and then there are statistics.

Causal relationships are hard to derive that people of one sort of another causes them to be included in a different sort might actually be because they are of a third sort.

People who use gasoline tend to wear shoes.

    • what's with the stereotypes? and drinking or playing games isn't done by 'normal' people? (or even some light drugs for that matter). this idiotic demonising of computer games does no favours for anyone.

and seriously, what's with the pic?

    • HARDCORE GAMER!! on XBOX 360 was #1 GOW 2 #2 GOW1 COD4 #3 UT3 #! you get the point...I do not do drugs and could never think about drinking and playin a video game...I did smoke weed and to be honest the experience of gaming was alot more relaxing and creative then the usual nail bitting excitement...so maybe a little weed would go nice but its not apart of the game..also i'm in my mid 30s and have a very social life especially with my family..its the new wave of entertainment our government has cutten back on alot of recreational activites that gaming has taken its place for the younger generation and guess what it will be impossiable to change that one around...to be honest gamin is a excellent stress reliever and great source for cheap entertainment..Yuppies back off this one and grab urself a cup of Star Bucks and to some yoga..

    • perhaps it makes them weaker morally?

this coming from (apparently) a "normal" person who does not play these games save once every 2 monthes when I catch up on enough school work to indulge in simulations of battles (I study them in school, so I consider them extra-curricular).

Anywho, I do know plenty of persons who do indulge in these all of habits quite regularly and think it quite normal!

isn't it relative, or are drugs and alcohol really bad?
oh, wait, let me stop before I put my foot in my mouth.

    • I call crap on this as the Prof. (if he really is one) that did this is from Utah and you know what that means right? You got it, its a Mormon conspiracy. They hate video games, drinking, wearing cloths that don't suck etc... And its limited to only 800 students on the Utah campus, and how many of them told the truth? Also if I was stuck going to school in Utah with a bunch of Mormons I too would drink and not socialize.

Interestingly enough they did not say that people who drank did so WHILE playing video games.

They also don't mention gender and age etc... load of crapola.

    • Or it could be that, while drinking, smoking, snorting, or what have you... the weapon of choice to entertain oneself is by video games? And shouldn't we praise this? It's a good thing that kids will stay at home while intoxicated.

Nothing wrong with smoking a joint in your home and then playing some video games.

Of course the majority of gamers are pot smokers and occasional drinker!!!!

They go together like peanut butter and jelly.

Games are pretty popular these days and so is cannabis.

The younger generation KNOWS there is nothing wrong with either so long as moderation is applied.

Kids today don't buy the propaganda BS any longer.
      They have tried it.
They know its not as bad as you claim it to be.
      They know you lied.
They can see that cannabis is MUCH SAFER than all the other real drugs legal or illegal.

      Keep smoking and gaming.
Its in the privacy of your own home and there fore it your right.

    • (disclaimer i am a hardcore gamer)This is one of the stupidest things i have ever read. gamers are usually socially awkward because they don't engage in "normal teen activities" like drinking and drugs. so what the fuck are they talking about.

i can and do back my claims, steven.

it's a false title because the article is about how gamers are something like 10 percent more likely than non-gamers to use alcohol and drugs.

"10 percent more likely than" does not equate to "likely."

well numinant if you read through the entire article, the "tone" of the article is that the study can be seen as not well done because it was on college campuses, where you know drinking goes on. so when they put qoutes around "likely" it is for you to take this study with a grain of salt. nice claim but follow the article better.

    • numinant:

Numinant's obviously right, 10% doesnt mean anything especially since this survey was done with 800 University students...Im suprised they found some that didnt drink/smoke..I mean WTF? How is this sampling supposed to represent all "Gamers" , it was a random survey of 800 college kids at school?!
There are just two many variables, one being it's not the games that are making them drink/smoke, it's freaking college. Ever been?

Now excuse me I have to go administer a "Who likes to workout?"survey..at the GYM.
