Britannica challenges Wikipedia online

The Encyclopaedia Britannica is set to challenge Wikipedia by opening up its source material to specially approved experts, who will keep the encyclopaedia up to date online.

Jorge Cauz, president of Encyclopaedia Britannica commented:.
"We are not abdicating our responsibility as publishers or burying it under the now-fashionable 'wisdom of the crowds'. We believe that the creation and documentation of knowledge is a collaborative process but not a democratic one."

And on Wikipedia:

"If I were to be the CEO of Google or the founders of Google I would be very [displeased] that the best search engine in the world continues to provide as a first link, Wikipedia. Is this the best they can do? Is this the best that [their] algorithm can do?"

Yowch. Though it does look like Britannica is going the online mass-collaboration route from this announcement. What d'you reckon? Wikipedia or Britannica?
