EU to debate cloning for food

Image

The EU is setting to debate once again whether cloned animals should be allowed into the food chain through meat and dairy products. Scientists currently estimate that the EU has 100 cattle clones and fewer pig clones alive, though race horses have also been cloned.

Strong opposition comes from consumer and religious groups, who argue that we don't yet know its effects on nutrition and biology, but advocates of livestock cloning reject the safety concerns, and say that the technology will help produce more milk and lean, tender meat by creating more disease-resistant animals

    • Interesting debate. This might continue for a long time, however it might just be that the cloned animals could be allowed into the food chain without our knowledge and without public consultation.
