51% of kids have access to any and every website

They found that 51% of those surveyed had complete free reign over what they looked at on the interwebs, with 29% of those surveyed also claiming that they've suffered 'bullying' online.
And all this just as the EU marks 'Safer Internet Day' with agreements from nearly twenty 'social sites' who are to do more to protect their younger users.

I dont see what the problem is. I found my way around parental controls around the age of 14 anyway... Honestly if you teach your children that masturbation is a healthy and normal activity then kids WONT get fucked up by watching porn.
Its much better that way then trying to hide kids from it. If they cant watch porn on their computer whats to stop them from watching it with a friend who can? By avoiding the issue and not being open with your kids then there is a better chance of them getting addicted to it later. Same thing goes with talking about sex. The earlier you do it(not grade school though) the better.

A lot of 14 year olds actually aren't as stupid as we all think. Yes, some definitely are and some even more than we think, but if we can't trust a 16 year old to get on the internet responsibly can we trust them to drive? Or work? Or live on their own in just a few years? It's an over reaction. Who cares.

I think it's depressing that it's only 51%.
Bunch of douche bag parents out there, geez.
I can't believe how dumb people are, that they'd take something like this seriously.
Yes mom and dad, your boy watches porn, it's not the end of the world. Please be more concerned about actually raising him, making sure his talents are developed and that he's a well rounded human being.
He can take care of the rest on his own.

Who cares? Let them have free reign of what they see on the internet. It's becoming more, and more a necessity for future jobs. Might as well get them acquainted with it.
The whole strict regulations over entertainment/information that some uptight parents enforce on their children is absolutely disgusting. The kids that are sheltered from these kinds of things are the ones that make the wrong choices in life once they finally are set free; they're bombarded with all the things their parents tirelessly protected them from, and they go on and field day.
The key is that parents have to play an active role; they shouldn't simply unleash a kid to said things, but they also shouldn't keep their children caged up. Let your child see what he wants, or learn about what he wishes to, just make sure you're keeping him informed of some aspects of what he's seeing, and be sure you KNOW he has a good judgment of what's right, and wrong.
Of course I'm no expert, I'm basing this off of my experiences. Being fourteen, and have been raised in such a way where for the most part I've always been allowed to view/learn about whatever I wish, I quite frankly think I turned out rather well. At least compared to the other people my age. By ten years of age I'd already been introduced to M-rated games, R-rated movies, and some of the internet, but I haven't turned into some horrible Satan spawn of a teen. I have several friends however who are already tied into drugs, sex, and general bad judgment. Coincidentally though those same friends are the ones who's parents protect them from the 'evils' of the internet, and mature games.
Sure there are horrible things on the internet, however having your child ignorant to said things is far from the right answer.

What is the difference between kids and adults anyway?
I'm an adult, and I don't seek out nor watch porn. Is the sort of human mind that is predisposed to such things supposedly going to completely ignore them until the age of 18 then overnight have the weight of the world's vices dumped on them all at once?
That's a recipe for destruction and misguided behavior in the first place, but hey, that's the way it's always been...so why change things just because the world is changing at a lighting pace due to technology?
You really can't save people from themselves, so you need to give them a solid set of internal programming and values to begin with. To be honest, the world may be screwed, but it is going to take a lot more "To catch a predator" episodes to realize what makes people good and bad has little to do with age compared to personality, direct influences, and environment.

Maybe I'm crazy, but is this really such a big deal? I understand the use of filtering software for younger kids, but for teenagers is it really necessary?
Unless your child has give you reason not to trust them, you have to start letting them have independence. Maybe check in once in a while on younger teens, but if you're 19, you really shouldn't need Mom and Dad monitoring you all the time.
Then again, we got the internet when I was...12? And never had any filters. The worst that happened is that I turned into an even bigger nerd, but really, that was bound to happen anyway.

This just goes to show how wrong it is to "cyber-bully" other people online. It don't make you look cool or smart or funny. You never really know who your talking to, am I right? These people ought to learn some respect. It applies to internet communication as well as face to face communication. We are all human, we are all in this shitty world together, why make things worse by bullying some person you don't know and who cant fight back or defend themselves and who might even be a 12 or 13 year old kid? Anybody who does this is just an asshole who probably has very poor social skills.

Blocking software is good for very young kids.
Once a child is a teenager parents need to have a conversation, if they have not already.
I do believe teenagers should be given respect and privacy. Treating your kid like he/she is a prisoner is not cool.
Of course, if you know the kid is doing heroin, coke, or some other dangerous behavior, that would be different.

Censorship is not the answer. As the posters above have said, it comes down to parenting. Kids are going to find porn PERIOD. There is no stopping it. The best thing to do is let your kids discover it, but teach them the right way to handle the information. Since the dawn of man women and men were considered able for sex and marriage at the age of 14 and younger. It's only in the past 200 years out of how many? A few million? That sex is considered "adult". Sex is healthy, as is masturbation, I don't know where this concept of 'kids can't handle naked people' came about. There really is no solid foundation for the arguments against porn. I grew up with porn, and I know plenty of people who grew up looking at porn (since we discovered boners), they are all normal, lead normal lives, and have families. Kids will look at porn, the only thing you do by 'protecting' your kids against porn is teach them how to circumvent your blocking mechanisms.

Once again it all come down to parenting. If you do not make nudity, sex a big deal then it will not be one for your child. Porn is not a problem unless the child really thinks they are doing or looking at something "naughty." If they realize that nudity and sex are natural then it is not the exciting taboo that draws a lot of kids to porn and other bad habits. Communicate with your children and yo will find they do the "right " thing more often. I quoted right thing because it varies from country to country, family to family.

I do not believe in censorship/parental controls. My kids have free reign. I had found some porn when I was a kid, and I didn't confuse it with the reality of intimate relationships. Does anyone remember what it was like to be a kid? Kids aren't as dumb and unable to handle information as most adults think. I teach my kids right and wrong, and give them the ability to handle the world as it is. I don't try to hide any part of the world from them.

ur right noxidereus u are an excellent parent. No not all kids are dumb. but not all parents are as smart and well rounded as u. U took the responsibility to LOOK to see what it is ur kids are looking at and u take the time to talk to them about it. Some find the internet as a babysitter, just like the tv. It not always bad, but the key word in your statement was u found SOME porn. When i was a kid porn wasn't as hardcore and in ur face as it is now or as easily accessible. And kids are on the computer 10xs more now. No one can live without the internet anymore so it is VERY different from when we were children. It ALL comes down to good parenting. If your going neglect what u let your kids see, their ideas do become affected.

ok, that last comment is deeply disturbing. wats the harm!? anyone under the age of 18 is highly impressionable. Children are ment to be children. and seeing things that are ment for adults is taking their innocence. Porn is fantasy and a lot of it is downright twisted. Dont get me wrong i love porn just as much as the next person lol! but these kids don't have the ability to find healthy and responsible ideas about sex and relationships growing up watching porn. and it does affect how they view sex especially when most parents and teachers dont like discussing it. I for one WAS a child who grew up with the internet the exact same way, with too much freedom. and curiosity definitely does kill the cat. so from personal experience and knowing how easy u can find the most disturbing things on the internet, completely worries me about future generations.

How so? Its not like people born before us didn't have things like playboy and cable porn to jack off to. Yeah, the stuff on the internet is a more hardcore and there's more variety on it, but its not like porn to minors is a new concept.

This isn't something parents have a say in, this isn't something the government has a say in. You think there is a way to control this, well there is not.
This is something generation IM has to deal with and solve on their own. One thing is that we are masterminds at computers. The kids that surf on their own do know what the internet is, and the kids that surf the internet with their parents around and only use it for school work and other small things are only getting lied to about the truth of the power.
We all have opened pandora's box and no group of people can save everyone, each must save them self from the whiplash.

Some kids get addicted to it and it can actually cause sever relational issues later in life, particularly with their future spouse. Sexual dysfunctions aren't cool and can really cause hell for the people involve... plus it's just such and awkward topic to begin with....

I agree mykuh. By pushing your beliefs onto your children in such a manner and not allowing them to satisfy their curiosity, there is a greater chance of harm in the future. Being open with your children about drugs and sex will allow them to make the decisions for themselves.
