You know, this really is impressive. I've seen it before though, with fingers, when my father was in a terrible accident two years ago. His hand was caught under a tension belt while fixing a conveyor belt in a concrete mix silo and was left in pieces.....*(brace yourselves for crude, vivid imagery)*... Basically, his hand looked like just a ball of bloody human tissue, fingers dangling everywhere. All his fingers were detached form the hand, only holding on with nerve tissue. He was rushed to the hospital and told that he may lose all his fingers....BUT, the doctors worked miracles, and were able to reconstruct his hand and save almost every finger. His pinky was nowhere to be found though, so he lost that, but holly hell did they do a remarkable job. He is still struggling with movement, but his fingers were sown back on, and still work! Right now he's undergoing therapy for it. But yeah, science is awesome. I thank it for saving my father's hand. What's funny is that now he jokes about not having a pinky. I'm a UT student and my dad tries to make our hand sign (horns) but fails because his pinky is missing! LOL

i heard a story from my physics teacher about some surgeon that does operations using spare nerves to re-implant cut-off hands... .pretty neat..
i think ur supposed to keep the severed hand in a frozen container until it can be worked on...

When I was on the phone with 911, the operator told me to take the hand out of the ice chest we had it in. I was told you are not supposed to put it on ice. I think it is because freezing it, kills some of the cells.

really?... that kinda makes sense but then i was thinking that.. freezing would slow down the metabolic processes and let them live slightly longer...

I saw a someone get there hand cut off. It was pretty crazy! I was the only one who wasn't in shock, so I called 911. I heard from her co-workers that her hand was reattached and she could move it only a couple weeks later. Medical technology is amazing!

This story reminded me of this article in People I read about years ago. Woosik Chung's Hands Were Cut Off When He Was 3. His father reattached them sucessfully. Woosik Chung is now a surgeon.

The funny thing is that the operation took longer than it should because he almost cut off the same arm a few months ago! Get in another line of work man!

Wow, its amazing how more and more evolved we are becoming. Yet for every advance, there are one million people out there working their way to a dawin award.

They did something similar to this when I lost my leg in a scooter accident. Only a centimeter of skin flab was still attached. Now thanks to a 16 hour microscopic surgery, I have my leg again. A bit frankenstein monsterish, but it works! Science should now work on a way to make $350,000 hospital bills disappear.
