Julia Roy who claims ownership of the distinction of "World's Hottest Geek" has decided to offer for sale on eBay a night on the town in New York City with the high bidder at her side. That's right, dinner and drinks are promised on her auction page on eBay and, while I try not to jump into things based on looks alone (ok who am I kidding?) she is quite attractive and I am sure would make a stimulating dinner companion.

Why is she doing it though? Certainly "The World's Hottest Geek" isn't hard up for a date....

No, she isn't, she decided to auction herself off in order to raise money for charity:water. charity:water is an organization devoted to bringing clean drinking water to all parts of the world. They have been featured on CNN and other news shows and, to date, they have helped people in 11 nations by funding 600 projects which will provide clean drinking water to a quarter of a million people.

In the developed world we take clean water for granted but in many other parts of the world it is a luxury or even unavailable to many, people. This UN site is a good resource for learning about clean water needs in the world. Right now 1.1 billion people do not have access to clean drinking water and as many of us join together to fight for a cleaner, greener world on many levels we can't forget that preserving and restoring clean water supplies should be one of the most important jobs on our agenda.

The bidding on Julia began today and will run until February 21st. Already the bid on her is up to $355.00 but personally I think she is worth quite a bit more than that in both a superficial sense and for caring enough to devote some of her time to raising money for a worthy cause in such a unique way. If you don't fancy a night with Julia though or if the bidding for her time gets too steep for you you can always just visit the charity:water website and chip in whatever you can afford. You can follow the progress of the auction either at the eBay site or via Julia's feed on twitter.
