Did Last.fm Just Hand Over User Listening Data To the RIAA?

Incidents like this highlight how the social Web can sometimes bite back if you are not careful. It also raises the issue of who owns all of this data about you and what they can do with it. (The same issue that caused Facebook to backtrack on recent changes to its data policy). Unfortunately, it’s come down to this: you really shouldn’t share any data on the Web you wouldn’t feel comfortable seeing in a court of law.

there is always the equation of quality to consider 'If no-one wants to steal/pirate your product then it is probably shit - thus it could be said that the product is actually good, possibly a work great significance and worth acquiring.'

There's no way to correlate last.fm user data of having scrobbled U2's latest crapfest and pirating (distributing) the album.

I just read that as well. Last.fm did not hand any information over.

Is still a very valid point

I'm glad to hear doggerrel response, hopefully this is true. I use last.fm a lot, I would be furious to hear if they did this.

This is all false- last.fm has issued an official statement denying this completely. If you read the article, techcrunch cites no one, no terminology, and bases this on hearsay/rumor. Please help to stop blogs from creating rumors that are harmful to people and services like last.fm. I'm ok with people creating rumors about fun new gadgets that may or may not come out; I'm less ok with alarmist articles that show little in the way of journalistic integrity. If you are going to make waves, please have something to back them with.

Sucks if you still pirate. Honestly, there isn't an excuse anymore, DRM is out of pretty much every music store by now, with the last big fish, iTunes going totally DRM free over the course of the year, so you can't even argue that anymore. At this point, the only reason why you'd pirate is because you don't want to pay for music, and well, its no one's fault but your own the the music companies sue you.

If last.fm does that, it would be the ultimate act of “selling out”. They would see many users leaving, including me.

Last.fm should Scrobble a scrotum if this really occurred.

If last.fm does hand over that information, I can imagine a lot fewer people would use the site. I hope they make the right decision and stand up for their users.
