"Increased isolation could alter the way genes work and upset immune responses, hormone levels and the function of arteries. It could also impair mental performance."

That's it I'm going to the bar to talk to real people.

By the way:Is there anything that does/did not cause cancer, now or in the past?I remember the days, when smoking was considered to be a great medication, mentally and physically, when tv was the devil's gift to humanity and would cause a massive loss of jobs and end all social life, internet ,masturbation led to blindness, madness and suicide, eating spinach could cause cancer,so did milk chocolate, rye bread, reading in the dark caused blindness etcetera, the list is endless. But seriously,in the past, all food, way of life, whatever, anything, could at some time cause cancer. And then, sooner or later, the ban was lifted.

American society as a whole has become isolationist. In the city you live on top of millions of other people but try to ignore as many as possible. Then you move out to the suburbs and retreat into your single family home and try to avoid the neighbors. Even if you want to be sociable who has the time. this link goes to a study done in 2006 chronicling how few people the average person knows who they would feel comfortable sharing personal problems with. Over 25% of us have no one we feel we could talk to and about 10% only consider their spouse.

How about we just make a list of things that don't give us cancer. It would have to be pretty short about now.

"Oy vey. This is RIDICULOUS. Its not about Facebook or Myspace. Its about sitting on your ass for twelve hours a day staring at a computer (or a television, or a wall) without having any physical activity or social interaction."

There are many other things that isolate us other than Facebook or MySpace so the title of this seems a bit misleading. What about iPods or cars or televisions or the fact that we all live in separate houses and not communes? This story is sensationalizing the real issue here.

or how about reading? do people read anymore? i mean people get really enthralled in what they read, reading for hours on end in total isolation. and reading is supposed to be mentally stimulating... its all about moderation.
