Check out this article that explores and tackles some of the stereotype's of gamers such as

Stereotype: Games appeal to juvenile sensibilities and are largely for kids.
Stereotype: Games are for boys.
Stereotype: People use games to escape the real world and avoid real-world relationships.

“I guess I imagine that community to be a lot of lonely guys with a lot of extra time on their hands. It just sort of baffles me to see the time they waste,”

What do you think about these stereotypes?

    • Well, I would love to prove the stereo type wrong, but the fact is there is alot people that fit it.

Yes, there are cool people online. Yes, most of the time, your sharing an experience with a couple of friends (like watching a car fly 200 ft. in the sky on GTA IV or shot 4 people with one bullet on CoD 4.) But there are some people that fit it dead on. Only now, they are not loney.

They become friends with other loney idiots to piss you off with their gril screams and "your moma" jokes in the pre-game lobby.

Now, maybe the number isn't as big as I think. Or maybe I just talking about a small percentage of the online community. Still these people exist and they are the ones that gives the online community negative attention.

Amen to that. We'd all love to not be stereotyped as such, but it's the mumbling idiots that make people believe we are all like that. I see it every single day when I play online. There really are people who do nothing but seclude themselves in these alternate realities. They speak absurdities (often in the racist or homophobia territory) and annoy the hell out of you. You ask them "do you do anything else but play?" and they will admit "not really." Now, these cases do not account for everyone yes, but society is so screwed up that we all get labeled as fools with nothing better to do.

    • On the contrary!! I remember since I was young all the kids wanted to hang out with the kid with the new console..we would all be there 5 to 8 kids playing super mario bros...to this day it is still the same...we just do it online now!! In some way, video games do fulfill some juvenile sensibilities, but that does not mean games are for kids, most games (the good ones at least) coming out today are made specifically to target 18 to 25 year olds, and even then I still see 10 or 45 year olds that can whoop some ass on them. Just as well, I've played with girls that can whoop some ass (just got my ass whooped by a girl on MK Vs DC comics online). Usually stereotypes are made by people who do not or have not experienced gaming. In a sense video games do help escape, but certainly not avoid. EVERYONE does something to escape the real world, that's why people go to spas, work out, plant gardens or whatever...so I would say to those guys stereotyping to not hack it until you try it (and get your ass whooped!! LOL)
