YouTube blocks music videos to UK users

YouTube has begun blocking music videos to UK users following a failure to reach an agreement with PRS for Music on a new royalties deal.
...
“I don’t think anyone is going to be happy about this, but there’s general understanding that we all need to work under terms that are reasonable for our businesses and we’re hoping we’ll come to a quick resolution,” Patrick Walker, YouTube’s director of video partnerships in Europe, told the Financial Times.
....
Steve Porter, chief executive of PRS for Music, said the organisation was “shocked and disappointed” at the last-minute notice of Google’s “drastic action”. “We believe [this] only punishes British consumers and the songwriters whose interests we protect and represent.”

YouTube will not be blocking music uploaded by artists or users independently, but official premium music videos will start to disappear from searches made by UK users and will not be playable.

    • The music industry really needs to consider how it can make money in the future. They want a massive slice of the pie when it comes to online video and sadly no one is willing to pay.

Am I the only one that thinks exposure to a variety of music effects my buying choices? Does anyone seriously intend on only listening to music on these sites or do they (as I do) end up buying the music to listen to it everywhere.

It seems they are simply wasting a lit of resources on something they can never win. Almost like the war in Iraq, but with music

    • america will and is be far better off without BBC anyways.. even UK would benefit more from BBC disappearing off the face of the earth.. The only thing they generally are good for is doom and gloom news as well as broadcasting F1 without adverts unlike ITV.. which thank god is in trouble too!.. Personally its the governing bodies along with PRS which seem to make these off the wall decisions being beneficial to that of a paraplegic rat! eventually they'll understand that frustrating youtube users wont do them much good as they'll use google to find an alternative site out of irony.. what a waste of time..

    • The simple solution is for people to start using some other web video service which isnt owned by Google. YouTube has clearly got too big there's nothing edgy about it any more.

    • I use sites like YouTube and Myspace for listening to music. YouTube's got pretty much the best selection of free, streaming music on the net, other than imeem and now Spotify, and this'll have quite a big effect on streaming MP3 sites like seeqpod, which use YouTube videos soundtracks as part of their library.

It's a shame there's still such a fear of sites like YouTube. They're amazing marketing opportunities. If people like a band enough to make videos featuring their music and then they share that will loads of people, why punish them?

    • Wonder what the real story is behind this? Google say "Prohibitive licensing fees" and PRS are being "outraged on behalf of consumers & songwriters".

That's what you get for eliminating BBC radio broadcasts to America!! How else are we Yanks supposed to become cultured without the BBC World Service?
