TMNG, which examined the impact of video games on both mobile and fixed service providers, attributed the strong growth of gaming not only to features on mobile devices, but also to increased network access, faster broadband speeds, and next-generation gaming consoles.
"Despite the current economic downturn, gaming has proven to be resilient in these trying times and is the leading entertainment segment that is fueling growth," said TMNG chairman and CEO Rich Nespola in a statement. "The expansion of casual games, simpler user interfaces and the proliferation of innovative business models is broadening the gamer demographic. The timing is ripe for service providers to hedge the business cycle."
The survey also found that the user demographic of video gamers is changing -- women gamers make up nearly 50% of the user base of some games and gamers are getting older with 33 now the average age of gamers. Mobile games are expected to make the sharpest impact on the gaming business in the coming years -- TMNG is predicting that mobile games will enjoy a 24.6% compound annual growth rate through 2012."

A panel at SXSW think that this year is going to be the year of the independent games developer.
Likening the development to what happened to film after the Blair Witch Project (i.e loads of crap cheaply made films came out)

Microsoft is already on that path. Titles like: LIPS, Your in the Movies and Scene it, prove this.
Just visit their family friendly website.
I get it, a business is to make money. But, don't alienate your core consumers, because at the end of the day we are the ones that will keep buying your product, talk about your product, ect.
What will happen? Well, most likely a new console for the hardcore crowd will surface and history will repeat itself.

I'll love to live in world where the big three stay true to their core consumers but the truth is that world came to an end with the last generation of consoles(xbox,ps2,gamecube).
I mean Nintendo has all but abandoned its hardcore fan base opting instead for the large casual market. And what have they received in return? piles of money, a generation worth of positive publicity and a kings portion of the video game industry. all this goes to show that the scorn of betrayed fan boys has been render irrelevant.
I have no hope for the console market, the PC is where hardcore crowd will wither away.

The more people get into video games the more watered down they become. The wii which is about 50% of the hardware market is a prime example. 95% of all releases on the wii are "casual games"(crappy mini-games with horrendous motion sensing gimmicks) that go on to sell millions of copies to the gaming illiterate(the rest of your family).
Since the aforementioned gaming illiterate are the fastest growing segment of the video game market you will soon see Microsoft and Sony follow the Nintendo path.
In the future we will see hardcore gaming favorites like halo and god of war replaced by all manner of production cheap mini-games which will spell the end of hardcore gaming..
