Job interview FAIL

Going for a job interview at Cisco means you should probably assume that the people interviewing you are going to be tech savvy, you know what with them working at one of the world's biggest technology corporations.

But one interviewee wasn't quite so thoughtful and unfortunately for her, learnt her lesson the hard way - by losing her recently offered new job.

After leaving the interview at Cisco she tweeted:

"Cisco just offered me a job! Now I have to weigh the utility of a fatty paycheck against the daily commute to San Jose and hating the work."

To which Tim Levad at Cisco replied with:

"Who is the hiring manager. I’m sure they would love to know that you will hate the work. We here at Cisco are versed in the web."

Obviously a bit miffed that she'd dropped her chances of getting the 'fatty paycheck' job at Cisco, she locked down all of her online presence; her Twitter was set to private and she changed the domain on her website. A great plan I hear you say, well wrong, thanks to Google Cache, all the data was available for everyone to see...

Oopsies!

    • what a freaking ass kisser! "I'll tell my boss you said something mean about my company! (insert children whining)"

It happened to me more then once, from my blog, to have people in rl react to what I wrote, mostly happening critics but once I did publicly complain and struck down my employer. When he found out I made sure he understood that my blogging was done outside of working hours so none of is business and that he was walking on a battle ground he wasn't about to win if he planned to do something about it!

I'll fight my right to express myself, in any mean I see fit, to the grave!

Perhaps Mr. Levad didn't relish the prospect of having to pick up the slack from working with someone who hates working at the company for which he works, or having to deal with mistakes made by someone who doesn't care about her job. Working with people who hate their jobs sucks.

You can express yourself in any way you wish, and people are entitled to choose to associate with you based on those words, which, after all, reflect thoughts and intentions. The young woman in this story should do well to remember that.

    • People forget that with freedom of speech we also have to be responsible for our speech.

Some people don't even have that luxury..

    • There is no off the record anymore. If you write something either on a social network or email or instant message you should always assume it is public.

This is why my language in person is a hate filled, expletive led rant at everyone and anyone but online I'm a real charmer.

    • Haha. Everyone should know by now that employers do a FULL background check which includes a MySpace and Facebook round. Twitter's not safe either. If you have a picture of yourself drunk out of your mind on that awesome spring break trip with some skank on your arm who looks high as a kite, you will not get that job.

    • People need to let go of the misconception that what you post and do on social networks are seen by your friends only. If it's public, it's out there. For good.

I'm almost tempted to say they're better of not hiring somebody who doesn't get that basic idea.
