Last.fm set to charge

The site has long offered a paid subscription option ($3 per month in the United States) that removes advertising and adds playback flexibility. Soon, that fee will be mandatory for listeners in unsupported countries who want to access the 7 million songs on the interactive music service.
Will this see any other pretenders fight for the last fm crown?

I don't really understand why those three countries are exempt from paying... I would say it's unfair but hey, I live in the UK so I'm not too bothered.

I really don't understand why that's necessary, there are plenty of people (including myself) who use last.fm mainly just to 'scrobble' their music that they already own and keep track of what they listen to! I NEVER use the radio part of the site, and I know I'm not the only one. Unless maybe they're going to charge just for the radio? I could live with that.

OK maybe I'm old school...but I yearn for the days when you could kick back with an RC Cola and One of those round containers of Spanish peanuts that had a penny or nickel and WOW sometimes a dime (oh happy days)..in the bottom of the container and we didn,t even worry about all the people who had touched that money much less WHO touched it...hehe. But I digress.....so take me back to those days of Amplitude Modulation (A.M.) and Casey Kasems American Top 40 where you could sit back for 2-3 hours and new you were going to here the best that radio had to offer and you didn't mind the Ads...because some of those were cool to Like "Id Like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony, I'd like to buy the world a Coke and keep it company...it's the real thing", Then commercials were cool...now they are just irritating (at least on some web sites.except for the little babies talking and saying "Hey girl can I hit you back"...LOL)..and to hijack or strong- arm someone to not to have to endure them is just wrong.....Take me back to the days when I used to record the songs I liked on my reel to reel.....the good old days...commercial free...ozone free.

I live in the third world, so no free radio for me. Don’t care about neither; I’m in last.fm mainly for the database and the recommendations. I don’t need you’re radio when I have my cd’s and mp3.

Never heard of Last.fm Don't care about it, either. Anyone who is dumb enough to pay to listen to the radio deserves to pay through the nose. To Last.fm, I say, get what you can from those suckers!! As P.T. Barnum said, "There's a sucker born every minute!" If you want to listen to REAL radio, and listen to it for FREE, try shortwave!!

The charging for online music services is only going to become more of a regular occurrence. Providers like Spotify have already launched a subscription service to listen to tracks without the lovely advertising cutting up your musical listening pleasure.
I'm not sure I'd pay for a subscription for something like this, if I'm gonna spend my money on music, I'd rather have a physical copy myself, even if it costs a little bit more.

if they start charging, another web site will pop up somewhere along the line. i agree, that i would rather have the physical product then pay at a fixed rate monthly, weekly or annualy.
I have very mixed feelings about our digital youth regarding the finance of great websites like Last.fm.
