US Dept. of Interior Report: Wind could supply enough power to meet US electricity needs

Simply harnessing the wind in relatively shallow waters - the most accessible and technically feasible sites for offshore turbines - could produce at least 20% of the power demand for most coastal states, interior secretary Ken Salazar said, unveiling a report by the department's minerals management service that details the potential for oil, gas and renewable development on the Outer Continental Shelf.
The biggest wind potential lies off the Atlantic Coast, which the report estimates could produce 1,000 gigawatts of electricity - enough to meet a quarter of the national demand. The report also notes large potential in the Pacific, including off the California coast, but in much deeper waters that could pose increased challenges for turbines.

There already is a note out about a $40 million media campaign to sell coal as 'green' ( yeah, I know : ridiculous ) at the upcoming national energy strategy summit.

I would pass on coastal windfarms in some areas for the same reason I would pass on oil rigs off the coast of Florida.
Having industry in the ocean will negatively effect tourism wherever these things are built. Many people, including me, do not want to see industry in their scenic landscapes. Oil rigs off the coast of Southern California are very unsightly to me, and I would not vacation anywhere where that was the view.
This would be bad for the Jersey shore, bad for North Carolina's outer banks, bad for much of Florida, bad for many beaches all up and down the seaboard . . . so unless they put these things where people don't want to go, count me out.
Now if they want to build windfarms past the visible horizon and pipe in the energy through superconducters . . . then that's something I could get on board with.

I agree they should preferably be past the visible horizon but when don't talk about aesthetics and tourism when air pollution on the east coast and the new england states is threatened by the coal burning power plants...clean coal really isn't that clean.

funny how all these "green" reports are coming out of the woodwork now that the Bush regime is long gone.

This is one of the main reasons why we don't need proposed PATH & TRAIL power lines built in our great state of West Virginia. Big Coal is responsible for trying to strong arm the legislature because they want to build even more coal fired power plants to power the east coast. Please help stop the CO2 emissions buildup by supporting green/renewable energy sources.

I agree. Solar/wind combined has been my dream.
If we can get turbines set up off shore and safe to seacraft, the sooner the better.Like yesterday.
We need to exploit at home energy as much as possible to free us from over seas bonds for energy. ASAP! - 2 years ago

Right down the middle in the grass! We can paint them sky color if they bother people. We have them here in PA and I think they're elegant. So sleek and lovely....

Only when the wind is blowing! We must set up a wind/solar public private partnership to solve this!

I was always under the impression that birds flying into these things was a huge problem, hence why we don't have massive amounts of wind turbines adorning our coasts already...

Hi dariustwin,
Your right that's one of the problemos with traditional tri-blades, the Spiralairfoil Wind Turbin is truly bird friendly in respect to Birds as from the leading edge she is solid visually, birds are not stupid as far as general nature is concerned and that is where the SWT has the advantage over traditional tri-blades (which push the boundries of nature to the edge of physic in the sense of chop chop chop and the Birds simple don't see'm comming. Have a great day and thank you!
