The U.S. State Department confirmed North Korea had launched the rocket but had no further details. South Korea's presidential Blue House would make a statement at 11:00 p.m. EDT, local TV said.
Japan said the rocket's second booster stage had splashed down in the Pacific Ocean, indicating the launch had been successful.
"The projectile launched from North Korea today appears to have passed over toward the Pacific," the Japan prime minister's office said in a statement.
The United States, South Korea and Japan say the launch is actually the test of a Taepodong-2 missile, which is designed to carry a warhead as far as Alaska.
U.S. President Barack Obama said on Friday the international community would take action if North Korea went ahead with the launch to show Pyongyang it could not act with impunity.
Sunday was the second day in the April 4-8 timeframe the secretive North, which tested a nuclear device in 2006, had set for the launch. In its only previous test flight, in July 2006, the Taepodong-2 blew apart about 40 seconds after launch.
The first rocket booster stage appeared to drop into the Sea of Japan, an estimated 280 km (170 miles) west of the northern Japan coast, the prime minister's office said in a statement.
The second piece appeared to fall into the Pacific Ocean around 1,270 km (790 miles) east of Japan, it said.

Of course every other developed country has nukes that I'm sure they test... but they don't go around publically announcing it and boasting like we're badasses. Even though everyone already knows we are. North Korea publically announced and basically threatened to launch their missles as a "test" against the rest of the worlds wishes. We warned them not to do so and there better be repercussions for this action.
Also, the US definitely has the stomach for another war. Obama wouldn't be as responsive if he wasn't serious about punishing North Korea, whether it leads to war or not. We're already juggling two wars, and although America might not want it, Obama very well has the potential to go through with it.
Also, I agree that North Korea can be easily wiped off the map. However, this would put South Korea in danger, and potentially us as well. I'm not sure who's allies with North Korea, but I'm pretty sure Russia & China are on their side. Which isn't painting a pretty picture in my head.
All in all, I hope North Korea gets punished, but I think it should be civilized enough so another war does not break out. I'm ready for the current wars to be over with as soon as possible.

"Our scientists and engineers have succeeded in sending satellite 'Kwangmyongsong-2' into orbit by way of carrier rocket 'Unha-2'," state news agency KCNA reported.
It added that it was transmitting data and the "Song of General Kim Il-sung" and "Song of General Kim Jong-il" - references to the late founder of North Korea and his son, the current leader.
Anyone have the frequency? I have a SW Radio and would love to listen to such inspiring songs.

Agreed, nothing was going to happen. But this sends the wrong message.
It says, "You can do whatever you want, even if we strongly condemn it, but we wont do anything because you have nukes"
First, it encourages more countries to acquire nukes, because doing so will get them "respect."
Second, it shows that the leading governments of the world are afraid to do anything besides talk and offer "stern" condemnation.
The Cold War is over and we're going back to a dog-eat-dog world, and our govts haven't realized that defiance has become the norm mostly because inaction on their part has ALSO become the norm...

Nothing will happen you'll just end up seeing a bunch of political posturing and empty threats. I really don't think that Americans really have the stomach for another war. the best thing to do is to let then go about their business, the only thing this accomplishes by testing the Taepodong-2 missile is that it semi even the playing field so that larger governments such as Russia, China, Japan, U.S. Great Brittan cannot throw their weight around in smaller countries as well.

Nukes are so last year. We've moved on to lasers. http://current.com/items/89940537/world_s_most_powerful_laser.htm
Srsly though, I know someone said "told you nothing would happen", but we don't know that yet. This just occured. Obama has asked for action. "Words must mean something," he said. Check out the link for more.

Whoop-de-do!
Does anyone ever stop and think that perhaps North Korea and Kim Jong were/are just manufactured enemies? Convenient scapegoats to keep the public in a state of fear and hysteria through blowing events out of proportion or downright lies about their actions?
I'm not saying Kim is a great guy... but rather that perhaps just like Saddam, Russia and our newest faceless "could be anywhere" enemy terrorism it might be more propaganda then truth...
Let them have their missiles I'm not afraid. As long as everyone keeps reacting to stuff like this they will keep doing it. It helps them keep their controls over us and whether you realize it or not is helping them keep us in this perpetual slavery.
Oh please government save us from the big nasty North Korea! The tiny little country across the ocean that probably doesn't have nukes or even the capability to be much of a threat at all to anyone but maybe Japan!

Uh... don't the US and other countries test rockets?
If the answer is yes, then why is our business to police them when we run the same or similar tests.
If the answer is no, that's probably because any missile testing that we do won't be seen in the mainstream media like this story.
Maybe if the US wasn't policing the world and harboring nuclear weapons of it's own, other countries like North Korea or Iran wouldn't feel the need to arm themselves.
What a ridiculously transparent drama.

Speaking from Korea
A) no one supported NK in doing this. They will be sanctioned heavily. It might result in a few tomahawks a flyin but not likely. this was just a last dying gasp from a rogue dictator.
B) We can shoot down any missile pretty much at our leisure. that's the nice thing about being the biggest military power on the planet.

Interesting how Current isn't up at arms about their reporters. Check out the story below. Strange, I would have expected Current to being exercising their media muscles, or at least printing 'free Laura and Euna' t-shirts. Something right?

Oh snap...what if there is a nuke in that piece that fell into the Sea of Japan?
I know that the Japanese government will try to recover that piece and there could just be some kind of explosive thing on it, but that is just a paranoid theory of mine.
It's probably nothing...OR IS IT?

well that will boost sales to the Middle east, the last one didn't generate much sales that N.Korea had to stay communist till today
North Korea first tested a Taepodong-2 in July 2006. It failed less than a minute after lift-off.
Three months later, Pyongyang carried out a nuclear test. International talks involving the US, South Korea, Japan, Russia and China on an aid-for-nuclear disarmament deal are currently stalled.
now they can join china and all the others in Communistics Anonymous and start getting paid Arab Money

but something *did* happen. they were warned not to launch those rockets and they did. that is a pretty hostile action and yes, granted that they were not launched on civilians they were still successfully tested and launched which is just another stage towards serious problems.
