Dubbed Puma (Personal Urban Mobility and Accessibility), the vehicle would be powered by lithium-ion batteries and feature a wireless communications network allowing users to avoid traffic and prevent crashes, the companies said in a statement.
The prototype is designed to reach speeds of up to 35 miles (56 kilometers) per hour and travel up to 35 miles between recharges. But the groups did not say when the two-wheeler would hit the roads or how much it would cost.
"Imagine small, nimble electric vehicles that know where other moving objects are and avoid running into them," said GM vice president of research and development Larry Burns.
"Now, connect those vehicles in an Internet-like web and you can greatly enhance the ability of people to move through cities, find places to park and connect to their social and business networks."
Segway president and CEO Jim Norrod said the project would "demonstrate a dramatically different approach to urban mobility."
Embattled GM, which has already received 13.4 billion dollars in federal bailout funds, is under pressure from the government to develop more environmentally conscious technology less dependent on oil.

Anyone who is not a fan of Segway/Gyro technology should check out the IBot stair climbing wheelchair.

Stupid Idea number 1 from the auto companies. How about you stop panicking about the recession and put your heads together to put together a FOUR WHEELED electric vehicle that is HIGHWAY SAFE and sell that. Don't waste time with bull like this 2 wheeled "im too lazy to walk or pedal a bike but ill get on my 2 wheeled BS thing and go through town" vehicle. K?

THIS is why GM is bankrupt... because they fail so badly in all the following key traits for transportation: design, engineering, build quality and practicality. I feel like, similar to car mechanics, GM only requires a highschool education for its executives. *shakes head* ... grats, i guess. (edit: same for the other american car companies)

The big GM Company as we know is about to get its coup-de-grâce with its coming bankruptcy. These nice eco-friendly vehicles are great but they will never generate the revenues that GM had with its SUVs and other big cars. In the eco-green category of vehicles, competition comes not only from other car companies but also from SCOOTERS makers like Vespa. And there's also electric bicycles which are allowed on bicycles paths here in Montreal, these paths cover all the city and the island of Montreal and are connected to regional paths, great way to avoid rush hour traffic...

If we are going to continue "personal transport", smaller is better. Smaller and smaller.

two in one vehicle, weird? I'm having a hard time thinking about when this would be applicable. Do you drive to work in the car and on your lunch break take the segway? Or maybe for vacations, but thats about it.
I thought that they were working on this stupid vehicle from the link below.

You are right, they were talking about the two-person two-wheeled segway. But, these misleading pictures are still cool. Would it be great to take your car to the mall and then Segway around in the mall?? Or you could segway around the office. Our out in the middle of the freeway.
