Phil Spector's Wall of Sound

Image

Spector is credited with creating the "Wall of Sound" recording technique. Spector was a pioneer of the 1960s' girl group sound and clocked in over twenty-five Top 40 hits between 1960 and 1965. In 1989, Spector was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a non-performer.

Characterised by bombastic, reverberating instruments which constantly threatened to drown out the vocals, the Wall of Sound was one of the first attempts to use the recording studio as an instrument in its own right.

    • To be honest, I didn't really know who he is was until an episode of E's Most Horrifying Hollywood Murders. I wondered who he was, now I know. Thanks for the clip.

    • Oh Phil...you're a Legend that isn't above the law. Although...it was touch and go there for a minute. I appreciate his contributions to music..but it's his humanity that's a little shaky. :-)

    • This guy always gave me the creeps. You know the tingling feeling in the back of your neck when the erector pili muscles pull the hairs straight up? That's what I got every time I saw him.
Fame went to his head and allowed him to treat others he felt inferior to himself as he felt they deserved if they didn't jump at his command!
Too bad. He could have gone down in history as areally great and talented person.
Freud would say it's his mother's fault!

    • Interesting fact: After producing John Lennon's solo hit Instant Karma, Spector was asked to turn the Beatles' abandoned Get Back sessions into a workable album. The resulting record, Let It Be, was a commercial success and the band's swansong.

      A talented murderous man.
