Impact-Proof Material Developed

Image

A unique goo-like substance, which upon strong impact immediately locks itself into a solidified form and then back into goo, was created by a British company. The material, which was dubbed “d3o,” is already being used in a range of shock-absorbing products, including footwear and ski attire. The company has recently been granted 100,000 pound by the UK Ministry of Defense for the development of impact-proof helmets fitted with d3o which should be able to reduce the kinetic energy of a bullet or piece of shrapnel by half.

The material was engineered using something called “intelligent molecules.” "When moved slowly, the molecules will slip past each other, but in a high-energy impact they will snag and lock together, becoming solid. In doing so they absorb energy

... of course the military wants it...godforbid we have some peace.

    • Developed...or Improved?
I ski with some of this stuff, mainly the back protector.

Impact clothing, the next best thing to your mother dipping you in the river Styx.

    • I see I am not the only enlightened one here. I was just going to ask since when corn starch was considered intelligent? Maybe when people are as stupid as they are, corn starch does look pretty smart.

What's in that video is just cornstarch and water, yes but what is in this "impact-proof material" is not. They are both something called a non-Newtonian liquid, they both rest in a liquid state but when excessive force is applied they harden. That is why you can run across a tub of cornstarch and water, when your feet apply pressure to the surface of the mixture it solidifies and allows you to keep moving. However, if you stop running it returns to its liquid state allowing you to sink through it. The impact-proof material being designed relies upon this same concept, but it is a massive improvement upon this simple home made experiment.

    • Because the injection-like transfer of venom and maybe not enough of a blunt force trauma, I'm wondering whether there would be any future in its use for snake-proof boots and clothing.

I have used kevlar-like material in snake"proof" boots to wear in Texas while deer, quail and turkey hunting.in many of the more remote and thorny areas of South Texas.

On a more humanitarian and worldwide scope, using it to protect villagers that encounter big cat attacks might be another area where it might investigated.

On a lighter note, Sarah Palin might want to look at providing caribou body armor sothat it might slow the "need" for the aerial slaughter of wolves that continues following a de-listing of certain populations of wolves on the Bush threatened species list.

      Good find, Bigdog_mike!.

    • yep - cornstarch and water has a similar effect, but goes completely liquid and probably would get to smelling - this has potential for motorcycle gear too!

    • I say we should only mold this stuff for the head, chest, and appendages. Avoidable groin injuries are just natural selection at work.

    • That's awesome! Though "intelligent molecules" sounds like some Sci-Fi scariness...

As far as "having some peace", this sounds like it's meant for defense, not offense. Maybe if no one can kill each other, we will have peace?

i've always dreamed of being invincible and having an omnipresence. that way i could stop every act of violence perpetrated against innocents. wonder how society would react if it was impossible to take lives as a means of forcing ones will on another...
