Pirating has been around since bulletin board systems, and was made even larger by Internet relay chat... One site won't even put a dent in it. It's like trying to control cannabis by busting a guy who sells dime bags out of a high school locker. You shut down torrents some other system will be devised, this will only fuel the fire and make it even harder for them to control... After all it's just 1's and 0's anyone can affect the face of the Internet and Internet piracy

Just keep doing it, they can't bring us all into court.
They're a dinosaur industry, each lawsuit they bring out is just another meteor wiping them out.
They can't afford this, they're just too stubborn and greedy to change.

I think music artists have the wrong idea... they should release the songs on albums for much cheaper than they do.. and if they are released on torrents.. then they should let it spread... it's advertising...
i would rather write and perform an amazing song and get my money via 3rd party sponsorships... im pretty sure that would get them way more money anyway..

Will this actually "solve" anything in the long run? Did suing Napster stop people from downloading music? Won't some other website pop up in it's place?
How long will we go through these pointless trials before people accept that digital free information is the norm and the way of the future?

I agree, why can't musicians make a living from advertisements, concerts and indorsements? Maybe even donations? Do we really need to make a musicians rich beyond belief. It's not they are doing anything that valuable when you think about it.

The one man band Brad Sucks leaked his own album to Frost Wire about a month ago with the intent of getting the album around. It's actually not that bad. In another case Radiohead (if you've heard of them) released their entire album online without cost, or, as we might be saying, donations to own. There are countless bands and musicians on Myspace letting people download their music for free, and Pandora Radio has introduced me to new music in the same way.
I think that the free digital information era is here already, we just can't let it become mainstream - 2 years ago

And they currently do! Bands make far more money from merch and touring than CDs and have for a long time- don't let anyone tell you you are "hurting the artists" because it's the fucking corporations and record labels who are pocketing MOST of the money the music makes!

exactly right about where the money is going delia.
unless of course the artist is on an indie label, then they may make a bit more off cd sales.
but honestly if anyone wants to support their favourite artists, go to their shows and buy merch. more money from your ticket and t shirt goes to the artists pockets than the % they would get if you bought their entire discography.

the album was self released yeah, but physically it was put out by xl recordings. and the only reason they did the pay what you want thing want thing was to boost physical sales. build up a hype and then hello radiohead box set.

i mean radiohead is awesome, hail to the thief is one of my favourite albums, and thom yorke's the eraser is another but all im trying to say is that they dont deserve as much credit as everyone gives them for the pay what you want idea. somebody somewhere down the line whether it be a label or management did this to make money.

Well this definitely wont mean the end of file-sharing. (duh)
But the end of TPB?
maybe.i hope not though
edit:
i just had a thought!
TPB doesnt actually host any files, it only provides the link to where the filies can be found.
So in essence, it is not unlike a search engine. Could one not compare it to Google? So following this same line of thought, wouldn't it be absurd if a court sued google for the content its users searched?
What if a user (and this is completely hypothetical, of course) used google to search the term, "how to make a bomb" or, "how to carry out a perfect murder"
Surely you wouldn't hold google responsible. So how could TPB be held responsible for the actions of its users?

There was a site back in 2003 called Supernova, basically the same thing happened and resulted in the launch of many other torrent sites including the Pirate Bay. Similarly, Napster's case resulted in the offshoots of Imesh, Soulfire and Limewire among others.
It's a cyclical process, the end of the Pirate Bay won't mark the end of pirating no more so than "Don't Copy That Floppy" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Xfqkdh5Js4) could have stopped illegal copies of games or software. - 2 years ago

As much as this is a big decision and means possibly the beginning of the end for public downloading via BitTorrent, it's not gonna make as sizable impact on piracy as everyone (read: mass media) hopes.
The people who want to pirate stuff, will still pirate it, they'll just be hosting them on private trackers, where their bandwidth isn't being monitored, and they're pretty much anonymous (due to encryption) plus, they'll be getting *much* faster download speeds.
This bunch of arrests is like chipping a small rock off a mountain, there's still soooo much piracy out there.

One of the defendants, Peter Sunde Kolmisoppi, admitted on Twitter that Pirate Bay had lost its case.
"Stay calm – nothing will happen to TPB, us personally or filesharing what so ever. This is just a theatre for the media," he said.
"Really, it's a bit LOL. It used to be only movies, now even verdicts are out before the official release."

If you download from public torrent sites then this decision is possibly going to hurt. However, public torrent sites are normally the last to seed the media, its not going to effect piracy as a whole.
Private sites ftw.
