Sen. Danny Martiny, R-Kenner, has filed Senate Bill 115 on behalf of the Louisiana Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Conference lobbyist Danny Loar said the bill is designed to be a "pre-emptive strike" against scientists who might want to mix "human and animal cells in a Petri dish for scientific research purposes. . . . It is becoming more of an issue globally."
Martiny and Loar said they are unaware of any attempts to do that type of research in Louisiana.
Loar said the British Parliament recently approved legislation allowing scientists to mix human cells with those of cows and pigs for possible stem cell research or other scientific experiments. He said the bishops feel the use of human cells in such experiments is unethical.
"The archbishop asked me to file it, " Martiny said of a recent conversation he had with New Orleans Archbishop Alfred Hughes."
What do YOU think?

Well we thought the Nazi experiments were controversial when they discovered how to successfully perform the heart transplant, but we still use many of their studies in the medical breakthroughs we have today.
Maybe they should try out some of these experiments. Who cares if the bible says not to mix cats and dogs together. You can see it now. People with eyes like lizards and other odd deformities. We can start with prisoners, morphing them into freakish nightmare's for the future's zoos. They can replace the animals as we drive them into extinction. This would cut down on prison cost, because a zoo can be more self sufficient, allowing more money to flow into the tax system.
Later after we've discovered more stable breeds we can breed our children into some of the most exotic creatures on earth, locking them in cages similar to those of the prisoner, charging more money for people to come marvel at are creations. We can gather around watching them play video games behind a two-sided mirror as we marvel at how amazing they look.
When they begin to overpopulate us. We can take them to factories and turn they're skins and furs into lavish fabrics for us to wear when we attend fancy ceremonies or if we desire something nice to keep us warm during the winter. Just think about it wolf boy fur or lizard girl skin. The most exotic way to wear it would be to the zoo, because what could possibly be more amusing than finding out where your next suit may be coming from. I think this sounds like "an honest proposal." - 2 years ago

I was once at a lecture where the 84 year old lecturer told us he ran, skipped rope or rode a stationary bike for 20 minutes each day and he had a pig valve in his heart. This was in 1988-89. We are just mixing it up differently. On a lighter note, it would make horror films easier to make however somewhat less frightening...Instead of screaming, "Ahhhh, a wolfman" you may be screaming "Ahhhhh, Mike...or Tom, or Harvey" ...you get the point.

animals are animals - albiet some have more... personality and intelligence than others
but if this being is a splice of human in it and shows any level of ability remotely similar to that of chimps or 3yr/o humans it deserves rights as a sentient or close to - being
in the first place .. breeding/creating such hybrids is only asking for trouble especially in the disease forefront
and 2ndly i forsee more a problem w/ splicing than tubemixes -- people that want certain genetic features ona more than just superficial level ...
whiskers / raw strength i.e blending w/ bulls or even gorrilla's .. or snake heads that want fangs and venomous glands ... and god(s) forbid those that splice right out w/ wolf and bat lol...if anyone else can see the semi-comical and disturbingly horrorific possiblitys.. by all means raise your hands lol

Well this is cool I've always thought it would be a trip to see the future evolution of species like dogs or the great apes but unfortunatly they will be long extinct before they get their chance to fuck the earth up with their hair brained ideas like the atom bomb or the chainsaw. well this could come in handy if (or should I say when)the sea levels rise and we need to get real friendly with the water, Gills anyone? I mean seriously who wouldn't want a tail or a half feline girlfriend! Anyone see the Island of Dr. Moreau? this is seriously fiendish shit I honestly don't approve of animal cruelty in the name of trivial science. It's one thing to develope insulin for diabetics from canines but to get that precious gentic material you have to subject animals to labratory conditions which as I'm sure you can imagine would suck for the critters. I feel their pain. Now say they can extact all they need with a single syringe full of golbilty goop from whereever and do all this in a lab free of animal cruelty, the first generation of these hybrids will surely be "abominations" and freaks fun to look at and all but is it right to furhter our role as gods of this world?

i dont know if someone's already posted this staement or not (i skimmed through some comments and skipped most; im on a schedule). but here it goes.
"because god said so" has no place in science. as soon as god is scientifically proven, i will retract that statement. i wouldn't have this bad taste in my mouth if the senator had simply cited the ethical problems of how it could go wrong (i.e., if scientists "took steps back in evolution" with humans the way they have chickens, by inhibiting or accelerating certain enzymes during embryologic development. not quite whats being discussed, but possiblly having similar ramifications).
but no. some old fart in a funny hat who draws is ethical wisdom in how it relates to the scientific field not by the consequenses for the ecosystem or the cures for diseases or the pain inflicted upon species of sentience. no, he draws it from what a bunch of primitive, brutal, ruthless tribal leaders wrote thousands of years ago while roaming the desert, raping their women, and throwing stones at their own shadows.

I am pretty sure this law isn't about mixing animal and human genes together - we don't have that ability yet. Rather it is about putting human DNA into animal cells. The scientists remove the animal DNA from the nucleus and insert human DNA. This is what the law is trying to prevent.

So wrong. Nobody asked scientists to stop when they developed Polio vaccine. Nobody asked scientists to stop playing God when they developed DNA testing. And nobody will ask them to stop to continue to find a cure for Cancer. That's not playing God. It's using the gifts that God gave us.

You know, they said "stop playing god" at every damn point in medical science. I respectfully say, screw that. If we stopped progressing every time some religious nuts yelled about god we'd be living in the dark ages.
If you believe in god, you must believe that he gave us free will- let humans decide their fate. How pretentious for you believers to assume that you know the will of the god you worship when you tell everyone else they can't.
If we "stopped playing god", people would die from infectious disease, disabilities, chronic illnesses, tumors and a plethora of other conditions at a far greater rate than they already do. If you want to look dying people in the eye and say "We could find a treatment for you, but we shouldn't play god", go ahead- but I won't and neither will the majority of scientists and doctors out there.

True, but at some point (which every person has their own idea of what that point is) people need to decide where the actual need outweighs the benefit. I think if through genetic manipulation they were able to grow back limbs or do other things of that nature then I'm all for it, but there is also the humility that comes with being human, and a certain compassion that come with fear and fraility I mean at some point humans are merely humans and we need to accept some of our limitations. I think limitations on life somewhat keep society intact. Now, whether this is God's will or not, I could care less, nor should "God" ever be used as the arguement for or against something. Using God in the rational immediately projects thoughts on the subject that wouldn't be there otherwise. It's kind of like loving someone, you don't truly see that person for what they are if you're projecting images of love on them. Intresting topic though.

i AM against the other bill that is being drafted.. house bill 571 or something...
"The bill says those individuals should have the "right not to participate in" or be forced to be involved in any health care service "that violates his conscience" -- such as a person who is opposed to abortion being required to fill a prescription for a patient seeking the "morning-after pill" or any other abortion-inducing chemical."
That decision and many others should be dictated by science alone, not personal emotions, affiliations or beliefs

im up for leg banning the actual combination of humans and animals.. there are somethings that should just happen normally in life... if you are going to die.. your gonna die.. it doesnt matter what you are going to try... that money is better spent somewhere else... im in favours of fighting any disease or any condition out there but blatantly mutating ourselves is not something that i wanna ever see happening... while that is far-fetched now... i am willing to bet you money that we are going to come back to this on a much more serious note...
Besides human populations are growing crazily.. natural diseases and disasters and reasons for death were meant to be a way to control the population of all species... messing with this will seriously harm the enviroment..

Everyone is going to die! Would you tell a Cancer or HIV patient not to get treatment because "it doesnt matter what you are going to try"? No, it would seem, as you say "im in favours of fighting any disease or any condition" but then you seem to contradict yourself and say "natural diseases and disasters and reasons for death were meant to be a way to control the population of all species" ...I'm a little confused by that.

I would tell a cancer patient that he is going to die from it.. i would also tell him that there are treatments.. and i would also tell him that today's treatments are not definate... so while he should be trying to fight it... he shouldnt be obssessing over it.. your life is numbered.. have fun.. do something worthy.. being scared of death wont make it go away but itll make you miserable - 4 years ago

Morally? I think it is wrong because the early experiments will be total freaks. Possibly freaks with human minds and emotions. Logically, however I think there is great potentional in the experiments, especially in the whole creating limbs, or curing diseases field. But I believe that it would be mis-used, by the military especially, and we would have human weapons walking around.

Gotta say I don't agree with this on any level. Besides, sickness, diseases, lost limbs, accidents, etc. are not misfortunes -- in many cases they can be blessings if people choose to view them in that way. Before you say anything take a second to think about how much more grateful you might just be for your life. Not saying research and/or medicine shouldn't be done or used, but I definitely think this is overstepping some boundaries.

The point is not to create animal hybrids...that picture is very misleading. Rather the idea is that by taking, for example, a cell from the regenerative tissue of a lizard tail and splicing it with a human cell (that does not currently have the regenerative properties turned on), that the 'switch' in the human cell will be turned on. Therefore allowing for regeneration. Read up on homeobox genes, its related to this.
Also, before you judge the research think of all the people who have lost limbs or body parts that really could benefit from it... - 4 years ago

I'm very much for pushing the envelope of science and all, but I think this is where I have to draw the line. I do not think that science has the ethical basis at all to create conscious quasi-humans for experimentation.
If scientists wanted to experiment with splicing some genes on already fully grown humans that give their consent, then that would be a different story.
But artificially creating hybrids is just morally/ethically wrong just like cloning is, but that's my opinion.

It's going to happen, maybe not in the states but some were some scientist and rich person are getting together so some sick circus freak can be created.

I used to date only on ethnic basis but now I must consider those legacy human strictly or cutting edge hybrid human whose self expression is through either function or form of part of another animal.. what parts would i want on the next partner.. so much for the gay faux pas groups.. lets talk cheech and chong about being tri-sexual.. try-anything

I think is is a GREAT mistake. This will potentially eliminate animal-human hybrid cultures (note, not talking living animal-humans but just cell cultures) that may be able to produce great gains in medicine

Yes, we already use many animal parts for current medical procedures/medicines. Even something simple like insulin comes from pigs (which ironically enough the head of PETA uses, hypocrisy much? But I digress.) They will have to be very careful they way they word this "legislation", but I have a feeling that scientists WILL experiment with this kind of stuff anyway- even if it's made illegal in the US, other countries will surely pursue it, and if Sci-Fi books, movies and comics have taught me anything it's that the world governments and military will do what they please when it comes to secret experimentation!

I try to find a problem with it, but I honestly cant. It's rather cool actually. I also think that gene splitting might have some benefits in fighting some diseases in the future. We often use mice and other animals to find cures and later transfer that knowledge to us (basic) humans. And for the record I would kill for a tattoo of the design on his/her heels ; )

Call me crazy (or just a Sci-Fi freak, lol!) but I don't really see the problem with this. So what if science wants to screw around with genetics? So what if I want wings or a tail or whatever? If I could I think I'd be some kind of human-animal-cyborg hybrid and have no moral qualms about it whatsoever!

Could a person who chose genetic alteration pass those genes to their progeny? This, along with many more questions that should be asked and answered before the making of laws or experiments are done. Many more questions.

Well the science isn't that far yet. It's only at the cellular level, and I don't think legislation should be made to badn cellular genetic testing and experiments. I guess we'll cross those other bridges (like will my kids have robot tails) when we get to them!

You're only assuming cool aspects of it. Sure, I'd like wings too, but what if they give us horrible features, like insect eyes or turkey waddles?
When you play with mother nature, it's not going to come out like a Star Trek character or cool anime. It's going to look like the hunchback of Notre Dame, and be shunned and/or horribly experimented on its entire life. - 4 years ago

That's only the first couple of freak experiments. Once it's refined enough for the public, it'll be fine!

usually I think you're right on however with this one I gotta wonder if you have given any thought to the suffering of the animals to gain these genetic traits or do you just not care? now I'm not an animal rights nazi at all, I love a good turkey and bacon sando. I guess what I'm saying here is the trial and error phase of this will be gastly. If you're ok with that then well back to my original post who wouldn't want a tail. what kind of tail would you like? a monkey tail, a dog tail, a cat tail, a horse tail?
