Facebook arms open wide to developers, one finger salutes at Twitter?

So after the outcry about their latest 'facelift' has died down, Facebook are reportedly ready to announce that they are going to open up their development doors to third-party developers who fancy a crack at building applications and services "that, with users' permission, access user videos, photos, notes and comments."

In a move similar to how Twitter's open API works, Facebook's new stance on third-party developments will reportedly also be free for developers.

Question is, can we expect to see Twitter apps reversioned for Facebook in the coming months?

Its clear to see that Facebook has been feeling the pinch with Twitters rapid growth...

Opening up their API means that they are backed into a corner, they could have already developed some Apps themselves but they have chosen not to, why? Well it's simple:

"Facebook relies upon it's users viewing adverts that are littered all over the site to make money, thus if viewers don't have to log into their .com part of the site but instead log into a remote App to access facebook then it makes it somewhat harder to advertise"

    • Good to see them finally making a move in the right direction.

Facebook have free reign over what they do now anyway - so many people are tied into that site, and their friends are tied in, and their friends' friends etc that it would take a serious bit of damage for people to find alternatives
