New Scientist posing eight questions about the internet

The internet was first created 40 year ago, 1.5 billion people use it as part of their daily routine. New Scientist have asked the questions that follow, with some answers.

But what are the forces shaping it? As it is very much a work in process.....so what do you think of the following questions?

Who controls the internet?

Could the net become self-aware?

How big is the internet?

Is there only one internet?

Is the net caught in the credit crunch?

Where are the net's dark corners?

Is the net hurting the environment?

Could we shut the net down?

    • Who controls the internet?
Anyone with a big enough voice, but on a serious note the people that control the internet are people that control the land the web server is sitting on hence why British government control UK internet and China controls chinese internet.

      Could the net become self-aware?
No because its not a redundant system like a brain, would you be self aware if people kept switching off parts of your brain randomly.

      How big is the internet?
How big is a piece of string?

      Is there only one internet?
The internet is like the music industry "it all points in one direction but it has many genres"

Is the net caught in the credit crunch?
Far from it, with the credit crunch looming its more than obvious to anyone with a brain that the net will flourish in the credit crunch, businesses will turn to it because unlike other shop floors the overheads are tiny by comparison.

Where are the net's dark corners?
      There aren't any
"the darkness under a rock is as important as the light cast upon it"

Is the net hurting the environment?
      Only time will tell.

Could we shut the net down?
You make it sound like its an option, its as much a part of our day to day living as anything... people will fore-hold going to the toilet for as long as possible rather that just go because if they are not hooked to the web then they might miss out on something. When something becomes more important than our basic impulses then it is far more likely that we will sell our mothers for some extra electricity money for our pc's and modems lol
