Scientists make molecules that evolve, compete, mimick behavior of Darwin's Theory

Using molecules rather than living species offers a robust way to do this because it allows the forces of evolution to work over the course of mere days, with a trillion molecules in a test tube replicating every few minutes.
"We can study things very quickly," says Scripps Research Professor Gerald Joyce, M.D., Ph.D., who was Voytek's advisor and her coauthor on the paper. Joyce is the dean of the faculty at Scripps Research, where he is also a professor in the Department of Molecular Biology, the Department of Chemistry, and The Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology.
Two years ago, Voytek managed to develop a second, unrelated enzymatic RNA molecule that also can continuously evolve. This allowed her to set the two RNAs in evolutionary motion within the same pot, forcing them to compete for common resources, just like two species of finches on an island in the Galapagos.
In the new study, the key resource or "food" was a supply of molecules necessary for each RNA's replication. The RNAs will only replicate if they have catalyzed attachment of themselves to these food molecules. So long as the RNAs have ample food, they will replicate, and as they replicate, they will mutate. Over time, as these mutations accumulate, new forms emerge — some fitter than others."

Response to questions from “ fun_size”
You made a statement about my faith being a feeling or emotion. It is not, I could explain
a feeling or emotion, I can not explain the Holy Spirit. You asked two questions .
First is there a finite number of souls that will be redeemed . Don’t know and not relevant , as that is at the sole discretion of Christ
Any Christian who says he knows how Christ will judge man is a fool.
No one knows . We are but biodegradable worm food, the only redeeming quality of mankind will be his soul and spirit. I think Christ knows our soul. He knows both the evil and the goodness within us and whether we are worthy of redemption.
A harvest is just that, it culls out the bad fruit from the good ,but only Christ determines what he deems as good or bad fruit.
Comment.
Look at the history of mankind and the condition of man today. What percentage would you guess you would want to spend eternity.
We are consuming the earth like a cancer , we are making little or no progress in having piece between us, we spend more of our resources on killing each other then trying to reach out beyond this small island in this vast universe. How long can we as a species survive with the limited resources on this planet.
If there is no God we are as doomed as the dinosaurs.
I believe God created this earth to nourish and provide for mankind for a finite amount of time. Just enough time to meet his plan for man.
Based on everything I read about the environment and remaining resources we have that time may be about up.you stated "Jesus Christ was God himself in human form?
No one has ever shown me where Jesus claimed to be God.
He did claim to have been with God prior to coming to earth . The oneness theology has not felt right to me.
Christ prayed to God his father. He told us to pray to God our father.
Most Christian theologians today have bought into a oneness theology I’m not sure why ,unless they wanted to make Christ God over God of the Jews. When I have questioned the bases, they always come up with some mysterious mumble jumble ,but very little based on what Christ taught or claimed. I hope I’m right or its not relevant to my salvation in the eyes of Christ. My personal theology, I base on what was recorded as teaching of Christ and further explained by the disciples who were with him. What Paul taught was of the Holy Spirit, as he never met Christ.
Further comments on this post.
We believe we evolved from apes , and we may have , who are we to question Gods creative process. It would be like asking an artist to describe each stroke of the brush , mix of colors and texture in creating art. - 3 years ago

This is very interesting...but scientists have been working on this for years. Nobel prize winner Harold Urey tested this and came up with the theory that life arose from a methane-ammonia atmosphere. So its very possible this can happen, in the right conditions. BUT geologists around the world say that historical evidence in rocks disproves this atmospheres existence and there is no evidence at all supporting conditions for this to happen.

A person I took to be an honest religious person, wrote me, to whom I wrote an earnest letter in return. I've copied that over:
______
Simply put, while you have been taught this stuff, and I am sure have had genuine spiritual experience, my constant lecture has been pointing out that the Universe (and most people can add up the presently understood information and relate to it), is so much more vast than the world-view that religions have relied upon, that the assertions made for "God" can not be real. Regardless of how clearly nor intimately you may have held your conceptions in your experiences.
The cosmological view held by religion, as to their God, is not found in the real universe. Surely the real Universe is the real God's work - or more precisely, these two ideas, God and the universe, are the same.
Where earlier people thought, and have taught their children, that as man builds a house and is within, God built our world and is within. However, in this case, God cannot be smaller than his house. The house and the creator are the same. If we look through the Hubble at any one point in the sky, we see thousands upon thousands of galaxies.
So we are here, on this one little ball, in this one little solar-system, in this one little galaxy, - inside billions of galaxies. This is the real flesh of God - (even though visible light shows but 4% of the mass that we can understand is there).
People may get a certain comfort with whatever we come to for our understandings - in your case it's this religion that you have been taught and that you have believed. But "God" is so - much - more.
It's beyond profound, and beyond astounding. Simply beyond. - 3 years ago

"for god knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be open and you will be like God"
"the man has become like one of us."I think its great that man are gaining an understanding of Gods creation, It draws us closer to his undeniable existence.
We have will have no excuses, because his existence is evident in his nature.
Man continues to gain an understanding of Gods creation and design for the miracle of life.

Interesting post. Im an atheist myself and i have major doubts as to the existence of "God" although i try to keep an open mind. Try is the key word there though since the more i learn about religion and life the less i believe but who knows maybe im wrong. I am human.
Anyways, the reason im posting this response is to get a response out of you. Why do you believe that "We have will have no excuses, because his existence is evident in his nature."?
There is no empirical proof of God or of any higher life forms/creators in the galaxy. So you believe that existence itself is proof of God. But why? Does the possibility that life was not created seem implausible to you? Could it not be that natural processes somehow sparked the first life form on earth not a mystical deity?
Dont take this as an assault on your personal beliefs. Im just curious as to your position is all.

And heres even more evidence for evolution. Too bad the supporters of creationism are generally rabid evangelicals who dont believe in the hookus pookus magic called "science". Well unless its designing them a new computer or T.V.

Response to fun_size
I’ve not always been a solid believer in the existence of a creator.
I’ve been an agonistic but not an atheists , not sure there are any atheist. When I first thought I became a Christian it was more out of family tradition, social circles and loved ones that I proclaimed myself saved and a born again Christian.
I try to keep up with current scientific discoveries and space exploration. Was especially interested if we found any sign of life on Mars.
I am in no way any type of scientist, but I think that it is possible that life is not a natural state in the universe. The universe appears to be made up of only elements with no signs of life . We seem to have a unique form of existence on this planet.
Nature is in itself evidence of something wonderful and unexplainable, we as humans , dumb asses like me or the greatest scientist in the world can not but be in awe of this planet and the life it brings forth.
However my knowledge of Gods existence is of the soul , my being.
Christ chose to open my eyes, as I was as many who are blind, it cannot be explained or defended, it is a transformation. Christians that have experienced this transformation and revelation, attempt to explain to other Christians and nonbelievers of what Christ has reviled to no avail. Its hard for those that have experienced the fulfillment of the Holy Spirit to understand that only Christ will call those whom he will and make this revelation and gift.
Ill not defend myself or God , he is a big guy and can defend himself.
I don’t think God thinks he has to explain himself or prove his existence , he probably has very little use for the sorry human race as it is. If it were not for Christ he most likely would have wiped out mankind 2000 years ago and started over with a new design.
However Christ is trying to salvage as much as he can of this diseased crop of mankind. Once he has harvested the souls worth saving we will be facing Gods wrath.
Im not sure Ill be among those chosen. i just hope God grades on a curve. - 3 years ago

Hmmm very interesting response. At the very least i can say that you are not a typical rabid evangelical. The fact that you cannot describe your experience is not all that surprising though i suppose. It is difficult to explain feelings and emotions so i guess religious experiences would be no different.
"However Christ is trying to salvage as much as he can of this diseased crop of mankind. Once he has harvested the souls worth saving we will be facing Gods wrath."
This quote confused me however. Are you saying that there is a finite number of "good" human souls then? If/when the rapture is upon us what of the "good" children yet to be born?
Also, my knowledge of scripture is rather lacking but to my understanding i thought that Jesus Christ was God himself in human form? If so, they why did God stop himself from wiping out mankind?

Everyone posting on here should take a course in molecular biology before posting what they've heard in movies or read in magazines.
RNA is believed to be the molecular origin for life because, unlike DNA, it can self-replicate.
But energy and amino acids, as well as several other conditions are required for the process to occur. These scientists have simulated those conditions to better understand the fundamental aspects of natural selection, as the process occurs in real time.
This is exactly because we CANNOT make animals- it took >2 billion years for that to happen on earth. Maybe in our lifetime we might see scientists create a bacteria from scratch- but even that is a stretch.
When you hear about biologists 'cloning' an animal or working with stem-cells, don't forget that we already have a complete genome to work with (an animals DNA), so we are not 'making life' or anything strange.
What is amazing is that, as you can see in the video, the boundaries between what we consider inanimate molecules and life is so hazy. - 3 years ago

I just read the plot summery.
That's exactly what DNA does. Total parasite that converts minerals - into fertilizer.
The big joke is only a minutely small section the chain makes the plethora of different animals, each constantly re-contributing adaptations, and in both males and females. These being stupid enough to think they are important individuals, each gaming to get laid and eat, etc - but really, they are only there in case an asteroid hits and wipes out a big percentage of species (which all are only there to carry the same chain in the first place).Ya see, the joke is on us.

The little models in the picture are in blue and green. They should make them in red - so when their animals diverge, we'll be able to see how it eats the rest of us.
Maybe that's what happened to Mars. Whad-da ya think?

It's believed that the first organisms on Earth were simple RNA strands that began to replicate and evolve. It sounds like these experiments could have strong implications for understanding the origins of life on this planet.
