Madigan's office said Wednesday that such existing ads on Craigslist will expire in seven days.
Madigan and the attorneys general for Connecticut and Missouri met with Craigslist officials last week seeking an end to ads they contend are advertisements for illegal sexual activities.
An e-mail sent to Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster was not immediately returned Wednesday morning.
Craigslist came under renewed pressure to remove the ads after a medical student in Boston was charged with the April killing of a masseuse he met on the site.

You guys said it all.. I guess. Here in SF we have many ways to get your sex on for money//
I do know that many people use Craig's list here for hook up and the section that posts if you saw someone on the street but were too afraid to chat you can leave a message there.well this maybe be the signal of the end of Craig's list.

Discussion over prostitution is ongoing. I agree with Andrea (above) that if Craigslist stops taking ads another website or property will be happy to take those customers. There is a right way of advertising and Village Voice in NYC had the right idea many years ago (in print never the less) Online advertising yet has to become responsible and verified, something Craigslist said they could not do because they simply did not have the manpower. However, they had no problem collecting $5.00 per ad placed as 'verification fee' that money went to 'charities' said the CEO. Why wasn't that money used to get some manpower to verify? The new system as per State Attorneys will screen ads both by Craigslist and spot checks by the AG's involved. Let's see what the new 'Adult' section brings.
And to Lucid: Yes, I agree, Prostitution is always better if handled legally instead of in dark alleys and street corners. Both for the client as well as the provider. There is obviously a need, so make it legal as we do in some States and make it safer. - 3 years ago

Personally, I think prostitution is dirty (ewwwww), lol, but I think if people want to be prostitutes then why the hell shouldn't they? In general, I'm against the government telling people what we can and can not do in our private lives. Things that do not impact other people.
Who am I to say that some person can't provide a sexual service to another person that actually wants it . . . no matter how skeevy I find it.
Actually, I much rather have hookers sell themselves online then on a street corner . . . I imagine it's safer and produces less collateral social problems.

There were some crazy inappropriate ads on there, and something did need to be done? Mandatory therapy for those who posted them perhaps? However, sadly I predict the end of Craig's List's rule over online personals. Another site that will take the dodgier ads will just take its place.

Since the last 'settlement' with the government has not really produced good results I hope this time the CEO will do the right thing. There is a need for ads such as 'erotic services' no doubt, but do it right. Screen the people who place ads, if they are legit they will not have a problem giving a Credit card or contact information. It actually protects them as well in a reverse way. People who contact them can be screened as well. People use credit cards for escort services, strip clubs and other adult entertainment, they should have no problem giving that information to Craigslist to be held in confidence. This will help protect both advertisers and those that seek the services.

Credit cards are already required to post an erotic service ad on Craigstlist.
