Dutch scientists have concluded that people with high levels of intelligence, hold this trait due to their efficiently wired brains.
Research carried out by Martijn van den Heuvel, a neuroscientist at Utrecht University Medical Center, and his team suggest that the efficiency of the complex connections within the brain, are similiar to transport routes taken by planes.
"If you're flying from New York to Amsterdam, you can do it in a direct flight," Heuval explains. "It's much more effective than going from New York, then to Washington, and then to Amsterdam. It's exactly the same idea in the brain."
Reseachers also plan to look into how selected drugs can increase brain power, along with ways of physically altering connections within the brain to change IQ. Heuvel says: "We're looking at communication between brain regions, so why shouldn't we be able to influence that?"
