Innovation: Physics brings realism to virtual reality

Computer games have come a long way from the pixelated graphics of the 1980s to the more polished characters of today. But the inexorable creep of Moore's Law has now taken us to the brink of further giant changes.

The latest multi-core processors and some smart software allow techniques used by physicists and engineers to simulate the real world in extreme detail to be used to create virtual worlds governed by real physics, rather than the simplified versions used today.

The video above shows how the results are streets ahead of the standard graphics of today. One expert evens predicts that such techniques could be used to create Matrix-like virtual worlds indistinguishable from reality within just a few years.

Why not use both like John C. Lilly's sensory deprivation research conducted in isolation tanks under the influence of psychoactive drugs like ketamine and LSD.

You could always use a float tank and psychedelics hooked up to a body suit and VR simulation for the full effect

    • Sight and sound are advancing fairly rapidly but the other senses are lagging behind.

It is not going to be "indistinguishable from reality" if you can't touch it, taste it or smell it.

The interfaces are still pretty cumbersome not nearly as intuitive as they need to be. They are making some progress with Emotive but that is still in its infancy.

There have been some attempts at body suits with sensors to feed stimuli to more areas that are promising.

It might take some more time but they might also be able to develope nanotechnology to implant a neurological interface directly into the brain to control the signals and simulate any kind of stimulation from the senses.

    • Virtual Reality becoming more real!

"One expert evens predicts that such techniques could be used to create Matrix-like virtual worlds indistinguishable from reality within just a few years."

      Matrix-like worlds! Sounds pretty cool.

I can think of a few Virtual situations that I would want to seem or "feel" real, if ya know what I mean ;)

Hey. Virtual sex can't be too far away!
