Stephen Hawking: "Humans Have Entered a New Stage of Evolution"

Image
Hurtsville
"At first, evolution proceeded by natural selection, from random mutations. This Darwinian phase, lasted about three and a half billion years, and produced us, beings who developed language, to exchange information.

But what distinguishes us from our cave man ancestors is the knowledge that we have accumulated over the last ten thousand years, and particularly, Hawking points out, over the last three hundred.

"I think it is legitimate to take a broader view, and include externally transmitted information, as well as DNA, in the evolution of the human race," Hawking said.

In the last ten thousand years the human species has been in what Hawking calls, "an external transmission phase," where the internal record of information, handed down to succeeding generations in DNA, has not changed significantly. "But the external record, in books, and other long lasting forms of storage," Hawking says, "has grown enormously. Some people would use the term, evolution, only for the internally transmitted genetic material, and would object to it being applied to information handed down externally. But I think that is too narrow a view. We are more than just our genes."

    • hype over nothing... why does eveything this guys says get so much attention? yeah I get it that he's a math genius and he proved black holes or something but this sort of obvservation and statement is nothing profound (this late after darwin and wallace). and this is cirtainly nothing new to anyone who's familiar with buddhism... why aren't I getting press for saying these same things? just a thought.

every choice we make at every moment takes us to a new path on the trail of evolution... chooseing to mate with this person or that... to eat this food or that food... to drink from estrogen or esther tainted water bottles or not to... everything we do pushes us into a new stage of evolution. anyone who understands evolution and what it really is can see this. information is not evolving... only accumulating. maybe our technology is pseudo-evolving but that too is by our hands. at each moment we are choosing to be what we are or are not and what we will be or won't.

    • OK, I'll disagree with the evolution and knowledge concept only because while we may accumulate more knowledge we will not necessarily become any more evolved. While you may have the book smarts, there is no immediate assocoation with experience, example; you know there are pipes in your house but you still hire a plumber. You know there are maintenance needs for your car but you still take it to a mechanic. Evolved? No, more information to draw a conclusion (that you can't do these things yourself, Yes.

    • Maybe in the big picture we do not physically change but with the co-mingling of races and the out of control birth rate.... we will be just a big brown, curly hair, puddle of mud.....

Perhaps you see them at Christian rallies. Generally repainted rusted out bluebirds with handmade curtains, cardboard in the windows, and some sort of horrible amateur "Jesus loves you" mural on the side done in latex paint.

The people inside generally seem to be having a good time though.

Good job "Hurtsville" on posting replies to posts that don't make any sense.

& Darwin and Hawking were disproved years ago. Why don't you research that?!?

      -------------------------------------------------------------------

Do please tell, who disproved them? When and where?

    • you can believe in Jesus or not. that is your choice and that is ok. but, you can't argue with the above point that i made because it is true. you resort to an attack on my faith. that doesn't make much sense to me. and no where did i "blame" it on anyone??? maybe you should read my response again and just think a little before you pull out the so overused God isn't real card. that is much to easy to use and it really doesn't really go that far for me personally. not to be rude, but it just gets old. i attempted to give a response that would convey my opinion and i believe i did just that without attacking anyone or their personal beliefs. wouldn't things be a bit more civil if we all strived for this here? if my opinion offends you i am sorry you were offended, but i will not apologize for the fact of the opinion in it self, or the absolute truth of the Word of Christ that it is founded upon. He is where truth, hope, and peace are found. and i pray that He is found by everyone.

    • Jebus was disproved long ago.

A man, that is his own father. Who through telepathy listens to you when you confess your sins and accept him. Brought on by a woman that ate an apple that a snake in a tree told her was bad.

Yeah, blame it on him why dont ya!

    • the "evolution" of technology could be likened to an analogy of generations upon generations of of stone workers who live each day chipping away at the same mountainside; striving to create an image to capture who they are in their existence. but, no matter how great an achievement or how beautiful the image in the mountain becomes; the stone workers themselves never change. the image becomes defined and polished, and even exceeds who it was supposed to emulate. it becomes a beautiful facade. it is not who they are. their work, technology, success; is not who they are. they live, work, and leave behind something they cannot take with them. an entire life lived striving for something that may last longer than the years they are given, but to achieve what? they lived an entire life to have only left all their achievements to be wasted by someone else. maybe the stone workers should evaluate who they are and chip away at that instead of the mountain. we may be proud of what we have created in the boom of technology, but i still see broken and hurting people. there is no hope found at the top of a mountain. it is only in Christ that we may find an eternity in peace. it is in this truth that we may find a reason for life.

Rotate the clock 20 years from now, when ALL of the earths people will have access to the information that 47% of us have now.

You think you've seen revolution? You think you've seen spikes in technology? You think at all?

      You havent seen shit!!!

Did I mention Hawking is a genious?

    • GodsnLiberals, this has nothing to do with the social mind you Media loving whore.

This is about the preservation, and active recording of what we know and learn as a species.

YOu can speculate that it is entertainment that drives the human mind , but in the end, entertainment or any percieved notion to stimulate reaction, can be classified as singular ,and exclusive to the mind who percieves it.

As for your nice little video?

Nothing to do with this subject .

      **********

My answer:(media loving whore??wow you have evoloved..) it has everything to do with mental state of mind.

This is about the preservation, and active recording of what we know and learn as a species.

My answer: what we know and what we learn as a species is actually getting smaller and smaller..we are a evolving to a species of "answers" and never bothering to how we got the answers.

      ************

      *************
My answer: YOUR SPECULATING that its entertainment..I am saying its technology..now the content on what is being delivered to us is the issue at hand..the MTV generation..the Youtube generation..you tell me..what you do these younger generations are more focused on now??? hunting for food and shelter or surrendering themselves to the most idiotic situations..technology is removing those vital items needed to ensure a healthy evolutionary process..no need to look sharp to survive.

future generations are getting weaker and weaker and when a much stronger species comes along 9AND YES IT WILL COME)..we are, pardon my french, fucked

my video???? it was made by a subject that pretty much proves my point and deny it or not..there are billions of these weak minded individuals out there..breeding..spreading..infecting..

    • I beg to differe..I think a fast evolving technology is doing us a de-service..we are actually evolving backward..

this guy on youtube is more known, famous, aligned, 'real' to the "average" joe than stephen hawkin..shows you something about our current frame of societal mind

    • The only question that remains is when it will reach its Aphex.

At that point, either the "fruits of our knowledge" will enable us, like it has been and will continue to do perhaps, or it will destroy us entirely, well, not entirely. As we will have amassed enough information through radio waves and literary archives to propetuate our evolution beyond man.

According to what Hawking says. I've broke this down to be my official statement on the matter.

      Argue with that.

    • This is exactly what Richard Dawkins was talking about in The Selfish Gene in '76. This was when he started talking about 'memetics' - applying Darwinian concepts to information, ideas and values.

    • Vesher, very good point.

Almost like a pyramid scheme, but only in the way it works.

Understanding and learning information has been widely unavailable to the entire world. We , as a "newly" evolved species can now have the knowledge, if acquired through education, to learn what is what, and who is who.

Stephen Hawking is a genious. And in what parallel universe do people think they can argue with him about something he probably just thought up and deciphered during a cup of java.?

    • i think he is right. with the dawn of the internet, external resources are widely available. the place where this breaks down is where massive amounts of people do not have access to this information capital, namely the third world. this is why vast amounts of people come to the west to study. thats what my father did back in 1982 and now hes got five educated young adults to go out and prosper and in turn help his country men rise up. it is very interesting.

    • Problem is , this collective information is not integrated very well or evenly . Also we compete against each other and could screw the whole place in the process ... Still , look how clever we are ! Let us now see if we can adapt to a more sustainable life .

    • I agree with Mr. Hawking. We have evolved to the point where we are so adaptive and resourceful that it is hard for us to evolve because we are no longer always exposed to the natural selections of nature.

We protect the weak, we have hospitals, we no longer compete for scarce resources, and we no longer (mostly at least) have to kill each other. The only way that evolution still continues in our species is mainly through sexual selection...

I would say we could possibly be one of the most adaptive creatures that have ever evolved... and for that reason may transcend evolution itself and remove ourselves from the evolutionary equation.

we are able to create outside forces that made our evolutionary mechanism weaker...less hair..thinner skin..susceptible to desease.....we are mentally strong but physically weak..in terms of psychological terms ..we still scratch our asses like apes
