AOL Lays Compuserve to rest

Compuserve was responsible for getting millions of the first users of the internet online. There's a good chance you know somebody who was a Compuserve customer.

Additionally, Compuserve was responsible for a lot of the development that happened with the early internet. Even the GIF, an image file format still used by many today, was developed by CompuServe.

The death of this company may not be overly significant from a business standpoint, but it is significant in its own right, as the internet we surf today would likely be very different had they not come along.

Check out Tom Krazit's take over at CNET.com for more.

    • I feel like I'm kicking them when they are down (WAAAAAAY down) but I never liked CS or AOL and usually have sought out less commercialized net access. Even back in 93 when I was first online through uni I couldn't stand the promo stuff we would get at the dorm for the New and Amazing services from this company as it was launching.

Must be how so many people HATE AOL due to the deluge of worthless disks they got as junk mail for so long.
