And now a former deputy national security advisor for the Bush Administration is lobbying to have the San Francisco-based Short Messaging Service nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for its help in facilitating communications during election protests in Iran.
Mark Pfeifle, former Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications turned PR consultant, first proposed the idea several weeks ago on Fox News. Pfeifle Monday sent an email blast of an op-ed piece he wrote suggesting the service is worthy of the prize.
“Twitter and other social media outlets have become the soft weapons of democracy ...It is telling the story of the Iranian people yearning to breathe free,” he wrote.

I'll give a Nobel Prize to the first person who tells me how a computer site or phone thing or little bird or whatever twitter is qualifies for a prize that's supposed to be for a person like Al Gore who invented global warming or Alfred Nobel, who invented dynamite, among whose potential uses beneficial to humanity is blowing up people who can't stop talking or twittering about twitter and/or people who name themselves 'Biz'

Normaly I'd agree but the mircoblogging site has proved usefull for political discourse and has made 2009 a lot less like 1989. Twitter as anoying as it is has made it harder for despots to remove discourse. Its made sure the revolution is televised, or tweeted but at least that its heard.

Al Gore is a nobel lauriete, meaning he could theoretically nominate them. I think he might just do that.

"...Deputy National Security Advisor for the Bush Administration..."
Um...yeah...given that Administration's reputation for competence, I am sure his recommendation will boost Twitter's candidacy right to the top of the list...
