The way I see it, if Windows 7 doesn't absolutely wow us, Microsoft is going to start loosing significant market share.

Windows 7 is nothing more than Vista Second edition, While they did resolve the memory leak issue, it can hardly be considered a new OS, It's simply "FIXED" Vista! Which is very pretty, but still lacks the sophistication and functionality of a quality Linux Distro!

The thing to consider about Windows vs Linux is that while Linux is better in terms of just the OS. Windows makes it so you can actual install things without knowledge of how to code. Plus windows runs PC videogames.

I agree with Tentative on some of this, though I don't believe that Linux has the better OS. At this day and age, to be forced into command line to accomplish things, and to have no central place for help, and no real drivers base (though this is getting slowly better) is simply unacceptable. Windows has been a step above linux for a long time, and unless Linux fixes these problems, they will be for a long time to come. Tentative is right though about the games and software; you can simply click an .exe file, next a few times, and you're done. And the games thing is a big deal, because of the amount of money in that field.

Hey, the BSOD is better than the Linux alternative; working in the command line until it inexplicably freezes with no error message. That makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I'm a fan of command line myself. There is a lot of power there. However, there are some things that are simply faster to do in a GUI. Windows has that in mind when they create their interfaces, and it shows through with the amount of time you spend performing tasks. Linux is still trying to get the GUI just right. There are still a lot of times where you have to hop into a command line to get things done. Installation of a program for example. Windows, you double click an .exe file, click next a few times, and you're done. Linux, you can try using an installer, but they never work correctly, so you end up in the command line, compiling, and using the make command at least 2 or 3 times. Linux users are loathe to admit it, but if a program built for Linux just works right out of the box, its a big deal, since in the 'Nix world, that's very rare.
Linux is only free if you place no value on your time.

Having used Windows 7 extensively (using it to post this comment) I have to say that I am thoroughly impressed. I think that what will happen will be very similar to the launch of Vista. There will be a lot of skeptical people, especially in IT such as myself. But, once the word gets out that the OS is actually performing well, and is all the good ideas from Vista mixed with the fast performance of XP, people will come around. I was very skeptical myself that Microsoft was going to be able to pull this one off, but Windows 7, at least with the people that I talk to, has a lot of good momentum going for it.

Agree 100%. I'm using windows7 to post this as well. It's not perfect, but I'm yet to have it crash on me (though in 2 years I've never had Vista crash on me either).
