Taking photos in the dark has become a lot more practical after Dilip Krishnan and Rob Fergus at New York University created a camera that takes photos with an invisible flash of infrared and ultraviolet light.
The pair worked on their camera to get images that could easily be seen, even though they were taken in very dark locations. A flashbulb was altered to emit light across a wider range of frequencies and filter visible light. The filters responsible for preventing a camera's silicon image sensor detecting IR and UV rays, were discarded.
Photos are taken twice, by the camera, at rapid speed (one shot immediately after the initial shot); colour information from the second, flash-free, shot provides a normal hue to the photo. The initial shot is the darker of the two, but is more detailed. This results in the two shots being merged together, to form one overall normal/balanced image.
However there is still room for improvement.....
