Is the end of men imminent?

In a new study, researchers say there is a dramatic loss of genes from the human Y chromosome that eventually could lead to its complete disappearance -- in the next few millennia. While the Y chromosome's degeneration has been known to geneticists and evolutionary biologists for decades, the study sheds new light on some of the evolutionary processes that may have contributed to its demise and posits that, as the degeneration continues, the Y chromosome could disappear from our genetic repertoire entirely.
"It's certainly possible, but it's difficult to predict when it will happen," said Kateryna Makova, an associate professor of biology at Penn State University, who led the study, which was published Thursday in the journal PLoS Genetics.
Although geneticists and evolutionary biologists agree that the Y chromosome is degenerating -- and far more rapidly than its X counterpart -- they reject the idea of a world far in the future where men are obsolete.

The Y gene has one function: to provide maleness. Anything else is pretty much useless.
Everyone is female until they get a Y. Humans will just come up with another way to give the required genes to their offspring to create males.

Actually, it is far from being that simple and cut & dry. There are men who have XX chromosomes and women who have XY chromosomes.

Excerpt:
In fact, there’s a whole lot more to maleness and femaleness than X or Y chromosomes. About 1 in 20,000 men has no Y chromosome, instead having 2 Xs. This means that in the United States there are about 7,500 men without a Y chromosome. The equivalent situation - females who have XY instead of XX chromosomes - can occur for a variety of reasons and overall is similar in frequency.
For these 15,000 or more individuals in the US (and who knows how many worldwide), their chromosomes are irrelevant. It is the total complement of their genes along with their life experiences (physical, mental, social) that makes them who they are (or any of us, for that matter). The last time I counted, there were at least 30 genes that have been found to have important roles in the development of sex in either humans or mice. Of these 30 or so genes 3 are located on the X chromosome, 1 on the Y chromosome and the rest are on other chromosomes, called autosomes (on chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 17, 19).

I understand what you're saying, but my point remains that even if one can be a male without a Y or a female with a Y (isn't that due to insensitivity to testosterone?) the Y chromosome's main function is to give the genes associated with being a male.

It is not exclusively due to insensitivity to testosterone - an XY woman gave birth to a healthy male child, as explained in the second link I posted for you above. We don't know all there is to know about the Y chromosome, it certainly must have functions other than providing genes for maleness. I have read about XX men who have fathered children the normal way without any medical or other assistance - they had functioning testes.

Evolution, or a change in the frequency of genes, may affect female humans to obtain the mechanisms to reproduce. And if not, then we'll all die out. :)

This same thing happen to a specific type of lizard. I forget the name so feel free to mention it. :)
Anyways, there are currently no males in the specie of (insert name) lizards. But, due to evolution, the females genetically changed into something similar to a fish, in a sense that it can change it's sex to reproduce.
If what is said is true about the Y chromosome, which might be since they have been recording that it has been getting smaller and smaller over the centuries, the females in the human specie may develop the same mechanisms as the lizards did when the male part of the population died out.

Male mole voles have no Y chromosome, and scientists don't seem to know where their SRY gene is. I suppose some other gene appropriates maleness in that species.

That's very interesting. I also read that Voles are one of a minor percentage of known species maintain the same mate throughout the course of their life. I wonder if there is a relationship between the two.

I think i can remember someone mentioning that they predicted around 10,000 years roughly, at the current rate.
It is also a rather hard thing to solve, because of the process that happens during birth that i can't quite remember.
It has something to do with the chromosomes interacting to repair damage, but it doesn't happen with Y... think that was it, was a good 4-5 years ago that this discussion took place on Physorg. (gene swapping)
Ah, actually it mentions it in the article.
" deletions and anomalies that have nowhere to go because the chromosome doesn't swap genes with the X chromosome like every other chromosomal pair in our cells do."And while 10k years is a long time away (if it was a good prediction), it still isn't a good indicator of when the males shows signs of weakening systems.
It might actually end up being infertility that kills of a huge chunk of men. (and the alarming increase in the past couple decades is certainly a worry)But we have the experts working on such problems at the moment. (from various angles too)
It would be a strange change for the human race to accept asexual life.
While culture will change as time goes, it is still going to be one of those things that won't stick with everyone.
It is an interesting thing to think about on how humanity would change to cope with the male side dying off. - 3 years ago

LMAO I was half joking when I made up Y chrome syndrome a while back BUT: "the Y chromosome, which once contained as many genes as the X chromosome, has deteriorated over time and now contains less than 80 functional genes compared to its partner, which contains more than 1,000 genes."

As Daniel Day Lewis said to Madeline Stowe in the Last of the Mohecans: "men and woemen are a breed apart" . I believe that if any person of either gender would be more motivated in developing what makes them human to the exlusion of all else, there'd be a whole lot fewer grunt males, and poof males around to
alienate woemen. If you believe in equality then you can't believe in dominance, or good riddance. - 3 years ago
