MacGyver and its cultural significance

MacGyver may have been corny at times, but the show was and still is ground breaking television, way more significant than it gets credit for.

    • 7 years and 6 months ish . My mistake . I decided I had better teach him chemistry when all liquids kept being experimented on mixed together . He loves insects and steam engines . So I think it would indeed be a good fit .

    • I watched the show when I was in high school and thought it was a bit cheesy even back then. But it's emphasis on relying on brains and personal independence over firepower was what kept me coming back week after week (...I ponied up the $100 bucks for the complete series on DVD when it became available a few years ago).

I've carried a Swiss Army knife with me ever since then...just in case I get kidnapped by enemy agents or rogue arms dealers.

Artemis. Yes there is a very good chance your 7/8 year old kid will love MacGyver. I was a socially inept fat nerd at that age with only books for friends and an amazing lego collection. MacGyver was my hero! Buy him the DVD collection and turn him loose.

Side note: I did develop a slight case of pyromania as a result of all the creative explosive escapes Mac used. While he hated guns, he was never afraid to blow stuff up!!!

Seven-Eighths of a year old?!?!? What's that like 10 months and some days or something. Tip don't use fractions of years to define your age. You don't have to be that exact and its confusing. Oh ya, he is too young.

    • Not the best possible write up about the show, but MacGyver was the Rambo of the slide-rule-set,...and yep,....it was that long long ago......(and far far away)

    • I did not watch TV , so missed it . It does sound a bit like the original kung fu though . No gun dependent thinking , alternative resources of the time . I like that it focused on creative thinking , and so would consider viewing it some . Teaching my son chemistry and electronics right now . So much fun to have , so little time .
