Bear with me as this is quite geeky. In a nut shell a company from Israel has developed a set top box which they say can deliver games on demand of a quality equal to a PS3 or Xbox 360:

"Playcast is aiming to bring PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 quality games, on demand, to ordinary Cable or Telco set top boxes via standard cable telephone lines. Their proprietary tech uses "ultra high-speed processing to handle off-the-shelf games and distribute the game's audio visual output as digital video."

The first large-scale trial of this new technology – which many are claiming could well mark the end of the traditional games console over the next few years – is being launched in association with Israeli cable network, Hot."

So is this the end for consoles as we know them? Discuss :)

    • I've heard about it, but there's no way it's going to happen anytime soon.

      Two main problems.

      1. No matter how good internet gets, who's going to have the bandwidth to shell this shit out? There are a lot of gamers, who could possibly handle all of that?

      2. People like to actually own their stuff. This means they can mod it, put their own junk on it, put porn on it, smash it to bits with a hammer or otherwise do whatever they want with it.

The idea that someone is going to fork over ownership of their console just for a more convenient system (that is completely closed off) just to save a hypothetical buck seems silly to me.

well, i was going to say what you said, but you said it. people think this new internet cloud thing is the next big thing. physical media will never go out of style in my life. same with consoles. and companies know this business is a cash cow, consoles aren't going away for a while. not until they can directly transmit a brain into my brain.

    • Bump that... Still want my good old faithful xbox by my side when gaming nothing like the heat venting out making for a hot room to hide the tears of joy as I smear the blood of my enemies on the walls.

Hope this really doesn't get rid of the consoles I really enjoy them for the various aspects to them.. videos/games/arcade games etc...

    • I think consoles are pretty safe. Like OnLive, this technology relies upon an infrastructure capable of handling it, and due to its nature will require a monthly subscription fee (something likely to be bloated by the telco/cableco).

      It's a nifty idea, but I just don't think we're there yet.
