The 2TB Deskstar 7K2000: Western Digital Did it First but Hitachi Did it Better

Western Digital was the first company to release a 2TB 3.5 inch hard drive, but it looks like Hitachi has done it better. The company is introducing their 2TB Deskstar 7K2000 which runs at a nice 7200 RPM (WD only could do 5400 RPM).

    • I'm with quattro, I have a HTPC and i'm seriously looking at one o these badboys as my case only allows 2 hard drives.

      Only problem is they are so much more expenive, especially compared to 1TB.

      1TB = £70
      2TB = £170

      Go figure

    • Actually, you're both wrong. The Hitachi isn't "better" because it's a 7200rpm drive. They meet two entirely different needs. Right now, the demand for 5400rpm drives is high due to their low power and low heat dissipation. That's why western digital released the 5400rpm(green) version first.

      And no, the only use for HDDs is not as an external drive. You will find these drives being used in HTPCs, DVRs, servers and personal computers/workstations for a long time to come. SSD reliability, size and price will keep them from being "on the rise" for at least a few more years.

      glad you said this, cause i was about to. SSD is too expensive for mass consumption currently, especially with the recession in full force. they'll chuck these bad boys into a pc/mac desktop and call it a day.

    • WD is able to get 7200 but its all about sales, release the 5400 first when its sales die down release the 7200, its how computer tech probably works. plus with SSD on the rise the only use for a 2tb "disk" based drive is as a large external device
