Facebook Acquires FriendFeed

At this point details on the acquisition are still very sparse, but it’s clearly a good match. Over the last year or so, Facebook has “borrowed” quite a few of features that FriendFeed popularized, including the ‘Like’ feature and an emphasis on real-time news updates.
Obviously Facebook has already built out some of FriendFeed’s functionality so there is some overlap, but there are still numerous ways FriendFeed beats out Facebook’s News Feed setup. One of these is the way stories are ‘floated’ to the top as new users comment on them. And FriendFeed’s system is truly real-time, unlike Facebook’s feed which users have to manually refresh.
But the biggest win here for Facebook is the FriendFeed team, which includes an all-star cast of ex-Googlers. Perhaps best known of these is Paul Buchheit, who is responsible for creating Gmail, pioneering some of Google’s early (and incredibly lucrative) advertising products, and coining Google’s “Don’t be evil” motto. Other ex-Googler co-founders include Bret Taylor, Jim Norris, and Sanjeev Singh.
And so begins the next step in Facebook’s assault on Twitter.

Facebook has gotten very tedious recently, with all the quizzes, and become a 'fan' of very pointless things, but the raw basics of it have kept me using it.
I dont think they can compete with Twitter because Twitter offers certain things Facebook currently cannot.
The current convention is that Facebook is exclusively used by people who are currently friends, that have met in conventional social situations, school, work, etc. Twitter however has created a new social situation and place to meet people. A lot of people use Twitter to talk about subjects with like minded people, make jokes amongst people, and eventually small social groups emerge. Sometimes, these people then move to become friends on Facebook or Myspace.
I think it would be wrong to assume Twitter and Facebook are compeating against each other. Most people that use Twitter also use Facebook, where lots of Facebook users dont use Twitter. A lot of Facebook users simply say they dont 'get' Twitter.
The thing i find appealing about Twitter is that it forces you to think and interact with people in different unconventinal ways. Being limited to 140 characters, means you have to choose what you say, you cant blabber on, and if you want people to keep paying attention to what you say, you need to somehow make the mundane interesting. Along side that, many people who could be considered celebrity's or people who work in certain industries that are usually quite inaccessible, make the themselves accessible. This is also something Facebook doesn't offer. Twitter users like to interact with people they might admire or look up too. In turn, these people gain immediate feedback and interaction with they fans or consumers.
I think Facebook will get stronger, by making people share more with each other, photos, stories, statuses. People who are currently are friends, who stay in touch on Facebook, will interact and share more with their friends, but wont meet many new people via Facebook Twitter however almost pushes people into meeting new people. This i think is the big difference..
Ramble over.

Damaging social skills? Well, I can't claim to know what it does to an adolescent, but, I 'found' facebook a few months ago and I've gotten in touch with many people that I'd thought that I'd just lost forever. I just hope they don't pander to the kiddies to much and make it a god awful mess like trying to deal with myspace is.

facebook twitter myspace myyearbook bebo no matter what new feature they use, or update, its all doing the same thing, damaging the social skills of this generation. Technology has come so far and helped so much, but when kids are afraid of ordering food , or calling someone because they don't know how to interact without electronics is scary to think they are going to run our world one day.

Personally I think this is great news - it'll be a change to have all my interests aggregated into one hub instead of having to refer to other sites all the time.
On the downside, Facebook is going to end up like Google in that people will be even more paranoid than they already are about how much information they provide them.

Facebook reconnected me with people I missed, for that I am an advocate for the site. I agree there are many questionnaires involving asinine aspects of friends I never cared to ask "what tarot card R U?". Connecting with old friends is finding out what their new interest are, some of these games gives a slight insight to their boredom achievements.......

i like facebook way better than "myspace" and "twitter", myspace is all 12 year old drama queens, and twitter is just...boring and pointless. FACEBOOK FTW.

I'm going to share an unpopular opinion:
Facebook collects information about it's users solely for the purpose of furthering it's own commercial interests.
I joined it to keep up with my friends and family BUT...
What do you think all those silly questionnaires are for? You're own entertainment? Most of my family uses it and I get all types of requests to join these games and groups that only last a couple months until people loose interest and we're treated to another set of games and questionnaires.
I can't tell my friends and family to stop sending me this crap because I sound like an ass. Instead I ignore them... and feel like an ass for not replying.
Now I have several hundred never to be responded requests....
Doesn't anyone feel uncomfortable when a "how long you'll live" questionnaire asks about your favorite TV shows and activities?
And doesn't anyone else notice that most people get the same answers to the questionnaires? Or worse, seemingly random responses?
And of course my family/friends are all like "Oh that is SO ME!"
It's fucking silly. People, please stop feeding into this consumer mentality. It's not healthy and it certainly isn't making anyone happier!
Feel free to hate me now.

Macol:
Hmm, I like some of the quizzes. Yesterday I took one that was called "What Body Part Are You?" with the result of penis (my vagina was so mad at me).
But, in all honesty, what does it matter if they know what shows I dig, or what colors I like or if I eat noodles? If they are indeed using it to amass information and then designing better items for us to consume, then isn't this just another way of using surveys? Maybe if they learn that I hate the Progressive car insurance girl that they'll replace her.

"my vagina was so mad at me" - hee hee hee (giggling like a little girl) :)
Facebook isn't always creating the quizzes, information collection agencies do. That's why you have to "agree" to adding them to your account. Then they sell that information to companies who are interested in selling products to you.
They don't use the information to improve the products, they improve the process of selling products to you.

I find it scary and dehumanizing... not much I can do about it though. Except make preachy statements on Current! :)

Ah, yes knowing how to sell it to us more efficiently and cleverly. Good point. I've always been very disturbed at the surveys that say "Are you going to see this movie opening this weekend?" Those are fantastic subliminal advertising. Or not so subliminal.
And I freakin' love that video! It slapped me in my consumerist face when I saw it the first time.
