In Japan disc-shaped machines known as "Solar UFOs" have become a part of the environmental cleaning system, as they purify the inner-city canals of Osaka.

Presented at the Aqua Metropolis festival, hosted in Osaka, the Solar UFOs weigh around 3.4 tons each and are 5ft in height and 16ft across. They run of regular solapr power by day, and then switch on a 1.3 kilowatt solar battery, which provides energy to the LED lamps attached to the rim of the machines.

The machines can cleanse up to 9,000 litres of water daily -- this is done by pumping fresh oxygen into the water. This is achieved by spraying water from the top of the UFO -- a technique which helps to keep the solar panels cool simultanouesly.

The Solar UFOs are built using technology developed by NTT Facilities, a Tokyo-based company involved in architecture, construction planning, power supply system design, and the management of large-scale solar power plants.
