Because the information crossed state-lines, the federal government is invoking the "commerce clause" to charge the officer with wire fraud.

well I don't know whether it should be a federal crime, but I really do agree that creeps like this should be procecuted to the extent of the law, him and all the other weirdos on the net. similarly, it seems the internet today has become a vast container for people's weird sex fantasies an twisted desires. I mean I get so very tried of going on the internet and getting contacted by frothing perverts, and when im bored enough to enter a chat room, it's all sex sex and more sex! you just want to have a regular conversation with other adults and all you get are pervs. And I really don't think a 21, nearly 22-year-old such as myself should be going into the teen chats just to avoid what they'll probly still find.

Unfortunately, state lines don't have to be crossed for the Federal Gov't to envoke the Commerce Clause due to the Necessary and Proper Clause and the Affectation Doctrine.
See Wickard v. Filburn as an example. - 2 years ago

SDLN:
Very true, even if state lines are not crossed, if the feds want to interfere they will find some roundabout way of invoking the commerce clause.

The commerce clause is the same one used to make marijuana illegal to distribute.

Stupid. They need to make some common sense decisions in cases such as this. Utilize the laws on the books in state court on this bozo and "dont make a federal case out of this".
