The new Nano signals an inevitable, though still remarkable, transition: The iPod is dead. I don't mean the name won't stick around or that people will stop buying Apple's devices. Rather, the sun is setting on what the iPod once was—a device you bought to play digital music. Nobody knows when Apple will add Internet connectivity to the Nano, but you'd be a fool to bet against it happening in the next three years. And with that, the floodgates: Once the Nano gets the Internet, why not the App Store? And why not GPS, a compass, and a touch screen? At the moment, these options are too expensive to add to a tiny device, but tech is always getting cheaper and smaller. The video camera is just the start—it won't be long before the Nano, like the iPod Touch and the iPhone, turns into what Jobs calls a "general-purpose device." The rest of us have another name for such a machine: a computer.

What you guys don't understand, Is that its not an option not to constantly upgrade the "iPod"
Think about it, iPod has basically built the mp3 player market, this brings alot of competitors. Therefore, Jobs has to keep innovating and bringing more the the devices, If he fails to do this then the competition will catch up and yes, the name will be around but they have a greater chance of loosing the throne.
Take microsoft's zune. Yes it has internet but in reality, It is only comparable to the old nano and the classic, they don't have anything similar to the touch or the iPhone. And now the nano has a camera.
Jobs is really a genius in this department, the reason Apple is king of mp3 players is because they have been able to keep the public interested and intrigued since the first iPod was put on a shelf.

I'd rather have a tiny little computer than a single-purpose device. I hate single-purpose.
If i could, i'd have furniture on the ceiling, such wasted space up there just being simple and doing nothing.
Could try it with velcro, but it's just not the same without artificial-gravity...
Toilet and Sink? Why not a sink ON TOP of the toilet?
1) You can sit facing inwards and use a mirror for shaving / make-up / whatever
1.1) Why not sit inwards in general? Easier to get in to the toilet in the first place, you can rest your head while you crap out last nights eats + it relaxes the muscles of the body because you aren't trying to keep your body up.
2) Less waste of water, washing water can be saved for flushing, if no water in tank, the taps released for regular water channel. (can be all done mechanically still)
3) Significantly less waste in materials and space.
Glad to see that there are already things like this out there, i love those wonderful people. If anything, there should be simple to access settings that put the device in a specific mode that requires a slide motion to exit, that might appease the single-purpose peoples.

Ok here is the thing about the iPod. The iPod is king, no other music device like it exists. Yes there are other MP3 players, but they cannot hold a canddle to the rep. that iPod has built. iPod has become a word in are everyday speech. iPod has become a household name that people are not going to throw out the window. Jobs has gotten his name out to the world, and now has the right to put out new iPods that look like Hold iPods, and cost more money. Propaganda my friends. Its ok too, because people are consumers and we always think we need a little more. I am happy with my iPod and I do not plan on buying a new one anytime soon. No matter what the hell the new ones do!

Who the fuck cares, iPod isn't going anywhere soon. Until something actually 1ups the iPod brand and not just be a side swipe and copy cat device, the iPod isn't going anywhere until someone actually does it BETTER AND MAKES IT SIGNIFICANT ENOUGH!
Like some other commenter said, I mainly use mine for music, and I have a 2nd gen touch.

Whatever you do don't criticize the design direction of an Apple product. Publicly worship at the Apple alter and all will be well with your popularity.

This isn't news, it's one random guys opinion.
"The rest of us have another name for such a machine: a computer" you can't carry a computer around in your pocket. The only thing close to that would be.... i don't know, an iphone?

and when the MPMan came out in 98 as a "digital music player", the rest of us had another name for a such a machine: a computer. it's fortunate we skipped the step of wheeling our computers around in radio flyers, or making jean pockets large enough to fit our laptops.

"the sun is setting on what the iPod once was—a device you bought to play digital music." he's saying that the original idea is changing. but with hard drives getting bigger and bigger every six months why not embrace a multi function device. i have a lot of music 98 gigs and it still wont fill the new ipod. there built for many things now.
