Results from the study show that 32 per cent of children support the idea that Google displays search results by the most truthful website first. While 37 per cent of children are aware that the search engine revelas the most relevant site first.
The safety of children online was also looked upon by Ofcom. Results revealed that youngsters had become more cautious about interacting with strangers online, and had taken steps to reduce public access to their social-networking pages. Up to 69 per cent of children had taken such measures, an increase of ten per cent from 2008.
Ofcom's findings supported the arguement that parents are monitoring their children's online activity on the home computer, with 78 per cent of parents with children aged five to 15. However web access via the mobile phone was rarely monitored, with as little as 15 per cent of parents checking mobile activity.

The average 12-15 year old knows a hell of a lot more about technology than the average adult. Earlier this year my 40-year-old boss paid me $20 to plug in his first home computer (which has Windows 95) and connect him to the internet. It was a hand-me-up from his 15-year-old niece.

They also believe a fat old white man drops down their chimney ounce a year and gives them gifts.
Kids are stupid, but they're suppose to be. When most adults believe this then we have a problem. Give it like 2 years.

Kids are not stupid. They will figure out the score soon enough.
However, there is no doubt some people believe what ever they read or see on TV or the internets. Children do not have a corner on the stupid market

I don't believe half of what I see online and even less of what I read. I have seen what a person can do with photoshop and well people will flat out lie just because they can. There for If and when I research any thing I go to as many sorces as I can to get a all around veiw of things. never rely on just one sorce for your information if you do you may just be wrong and look like a fool to those you are trying to empress. I can do that with out any help from being wrong about stuff.

Only 32% of people thought that google arranges answers by truth level. And that was probably just a guess on their part.
Which means that 68% weren't fucking morons.
There seems to be an awfully close correlation to some current events right now.

a generation of cogs... with no ability for critical thinking... that is what this should be relabeled.
a generation of freaken cogs,
why think for yourself or do research when google will give you your answers... no thinking required, suck up the media propaganda that will be reinforced by the propaganda google force feeds them for who ever is paying for their pages to be listed first....

How about we teach our kids to not believe EVERYTHING they read?
I'm always skeptical of things until I've found irrefutable proof. Lots of times stories are exaggerated or embellished to make the consumer of the information feel or think a certian way. (Check out that Bible!)
Letting your children know that some people switch around events and facts to gain favor will benefit them greatly.
I didn't think this was important until Bill O'Reilly got a WWII battle mixed up and claimed the Americans at Malmedy (December, 1944) slaughtered the Germans, when in fact... The American troops surrendered to the Germans, and were taken into a field and shot, unarmed as POWs.
Definitely. Check fact sources. Teach your kids to pry and search for the facts. At times they're buried under a ton of (for lack of a better word) Bullshit.

Ahahahaha, kids are so dumb.
But I bet the pretty much every one, when they were kids, thought that their parents knew everything. So it really isn't that bad, eventually they will relies that the internet, just like everything else, can lie.

It's more likely that Google sorts by relevance, familiarity, and sponsorship (i.e. who pays more) then "truthfulness"
I bet the stats for Wikipedia in this category is similar if not the same number, and most likely the same people too.

Thinking about it, this is a little worrying. There's a whole generation of young people growing up who might not see the difference between claims made in a blog and facts from a reputable source by the BBC because they've been introduced to them side by side.
What instances can people here think of where the web was used to disseminate widespread false propaganda?

I agree -- the internet is becoming a house of smoke and mirrors; merging all information as 'truth', with very little clue as to which sources are real or fake.
Even when doing homework, kids are heading straight to the internet; forget the 250-page book written by the scholar himself, let's just go to Google and get it in 3-seconds flat, from some random source.

I dont think this is that big of a deal. Kids are kids and besides, kids arent saying that all information on the web is accurate, just that Google's algorithm is accurate. And really, they have no reason to believe otherwise. And I'm sure if a kid was to go have a stupid little kid argument with his friends using google's algorithm as a source, then he's eventually going to be shot down before hes 15.
