We’re all porn stars now, thanks to airport security

It was in 2009 that airport security added the new full-body x-ray scanners to their arsenal of devices to humiliate and traumatise travellers. Sarah Barrett, head of customer experience at Manchester airport, says, “This scanner completely takes away the hassle of needing to undress.” Because we’ll do it for you.

    • What's the problem, is there that much shame in your came you're afraid to be seen? Think of all the time and energy this will save not to mention increased safety, If it's truly too much for you to handle there's always the bus and self help videos.

    • haha Atalanda! you're exactly right.

this is a GIANT infringement of human rights! yah so your line will go a bit faster. what about all the ways this can be exploited?

this, just like most American decisions, will create more problems than solutions.

    • I don't really care if airport screeners seen me naked if it is in the name of airline safety but I sure don't want to see that bluish horrible monsterish version of my grandma naked ever again.

    • This will not find the new body bombs now being used by terrorists. They are made with bi-liquid explosives and shoved up the ass of a suicide murderer then detonated by remote controle.
My solution to this new form of bomb is to have people walk through a bomb proof box one at a time and use electronics to activate any type of device within the box so that the suicide murderer then blows up inside the box without hurting anyone else.

    • They should allow people to be voluntarily naked in airports and during air travel. Yes, that's my stance.

Being forced to undress can be demeaning, unless you're into that sort of thing; being scanned in this fashion seems awfully intrusive, considering one wears clothes so as to NOT reveal their body in such a way.

I don't mind being naked. Actually, I quite like being naked. Now, if I were the only naked person in an airport, then I'd feel a bit uncomfortable. But if I was merely one of many nude travelers, I wouldn't have much of an issue with it. Plus, the airport bar inevitably would be more fun, too.

It doesn't make much sense to mandate all the covering up just to authorize ways to see through it all.

    • At first glance this may sound like a bad idea. But really, who really enjoys standing in airport lines? Not to mention, if this is optional then I don't see why it would be a problem to those who volunteer to go through with it.

And as for pervs getting off on checking out 'naked' people. Really? Just scroll back up to the photo. Looking at an alien Sinead O'Conor doesn't sound like a win situation.

@Ares, an enormous Denny's. Quite the analogy you have there.

    • This sounds like such a great idea. It will speed up the long airport security checks that are currently going on. No more taking off all your clothes in front of people. This is so much better. Its lame that people are upset about this.

    • Sexual harassment lawsuits just WAITING to happen.

Who knows - maybe it'll spur some frequent-flyers to get in shape for their favorite Body Scanner!

    • Hahahaha... wait, seriously? People are freaked out by this? Come -on-.
They are trying to keep us safe and all these people can think about is "they might see my blue-tinted, un-detailed, bald body"?

      Christ.

Edit: Oh and I'd like to point out that the title for this article is totally unfounded. There is nothing sexual about these x-rays.

They are not keeping us safe, they are just taking away our rights to privacy for a profit. I have not committed any crime so why should I be treated like one. If terrorist really want to hijack more planes these scanners are not going to stop them. The only thing accomplished by these scanners are infringements on our personal freedom and wasted tax dollars going to greedy defense contractors.

    • Right, because I'm sure people are dying to have that job. Have you been in an airport recently? It's like being in an enormous Denny's.

They aren't selling the images or anything, do you complain that your doctor has to see you naked in order to fully assess your health? Why should it matter if you have to be quasi-naked in an equally private environment to be sure you have a safe flight?

The sentiment that has wasted an enormous amount of money pointlessness.

If the terrorists wanted to take down buildings with planes, they would have get on the planes as EMPLOYEES, to set charges and demolition material in the buildings, evade NORAD and... oh wait, that happened on 9/11.

These "security" measures do nothing to influence our safety. Not electing people who think we are cattle is the way to influence our safety.

Yawn. Ben Franklin also said that a good husband was worth two good wives, for the scarcer things are, the more they're worth. Yet he was repeatedly unfaithful to his wife.

Furthermore, do you use that quote to imply that we should surrender our right to free speech? For indeed, if we can say anything we want to, what's to stop people from shooting us in the face?

I'd just like to see evidence that this stuff produces results. When was the last time someone got through security (with intention to harm) because the technology wasn't up to snuff?

You have millions of people taking their shoes off in airports because one person lit theirs on fire?

Privacy aside, how much does this cost? Seems like a huge waste of money. There is no doubt that security will be breached, people will always find ways to get around this stuff.

I think this is another example of the people in charge doing something, not because it works, but because it is something.
