Is Windows 7 Going to Boost Mac Sales?

Image

The PC industry is keenly awaiting the launch of Windows 7 in the hope that it will deliver it from its woes. Probably, Apple also has its sights firmly fixed on the sandglass counting down to the launch, but for a different reason, of course. Apple need not be fazed by the launch, though, if Broadpoint AmTech analyst Brian Marshall is to be believed...

    • I have Windows 7. Basically, compared to the MAC, it sucks. The problem with Windows 7 is that you need to have compatible software. If any of your software won't run on Windows 7, you're screwed unless you're willing to do without the software, and you won't even know this until you have Windows 7 and try to install stuff on it, at which point you'll be forced to go out and buy all new software and hardware too.

This is the same problem that Vista had. But Windows 7 is slightly more forgiving. Just slightly. Not all software has updated drivers for Windows 7. Same for hardware. If you have a system older than 2 years or so, you may as well forget about Windows 7. It won't even install on your system, and if it does, it probably won't work with your sound card or video card.

Bottom line: if you want to run Windows 7 you need a new computer to run it on as well as new hardware and software. Windows 7 is an industry scam to force people into buying all new systems, hardware and software.

After trying Windows 7 and realizing I needed a new system, guess what? I bought a MAC.

    • What a short article.
I've been dual booting XP and Win7 RC for a few months and I think that come my next build I'll be installing Win7 for sure as I've been really impressed with it so far.
I don't see any point in switching over to apple now. I have no real need to.

    • This article is not true. I am running the Windows 7 Evaluation at this moment and it works great. Has improved considerably over Vista. Apple at this point doesnt have a chance of competing with PC's. Apples are not geared toward business at all, as where Windows is. Overall, Windows is cheaper to run due to excessive prices of actual Mac computers. Plus, you can run Windows 7 on any computer, while Snow Leopard can only run on Intel based computer's with specific hardware configurations. I will take Windows 7 any day.
As for Linux, completely against it. I was running a dual boot system (two OS' on the same system, pick which one to run) with Ubuntu. It was not very good. Few companies provide drivers, and there is little support past blogs. Only thing that is great about Linux is that anyone can change the program to their liking including binary coding.

it also has no DRM and is not filled with Sony mandated bluray rootkit code. I personally wouldn't dare run any windows later than XP on machines carrying vital industrial secrets.

The stories of Adobe remotely rooting and locking out user machines because they detect changes in their DLLs are really pretty horrifying.

Sounds like you disagree with Ubuntu's philosophy and are judging Linux as a whole because of it. Ubuntu does not include proprietary drivers if they do not make their source code freely available. There are other versions of Linux based on Ubuntu that make those freely available, or you can allow access to repositories for Ubuntu that contain proprietary drivers.

Linux is used on the majority of Web Servers (including Wikipedia and Google) and the majority of the world's fastest supercomputers. The competition posed by open source hardware/OS has forced Windows and Mac to evolve and push their innovation to keep up. I don't know that Windows 7 would be as good as it is if it weren't for Linux.

    • Another poorly written article! There was no in depth analysis. I guess I'll add my own insights...

Yes, of course. Many people never made the jump to Vista from XP, and since Windows 7 is being viewed as essentially the same as Vista (whethere it's true or not) it is likely that many XP diehards will not make the leap. But if they won't upgrade to Vista/W7, why Mac? I don't think they will do so right away, but XP's end of life is 2014. At that time when users are looking to upgrade or when their current XP machines become obsolete they might see the switching cost to Mac as being equivalent or lower to that of switching to Windows 7. I think Linux usage will also increase as a result of this change for the same reasons.
