One of the calls was with my assistant, Kat. She's been a Microsoft MVP in the area of Windows Security for over four years now, and has been considered an Expert in the malware removal community for about seven years. We talked a bit about the security side of Windows 7, and her take on the new operating system in general.

    • On the advice of my computer-geek friend, I waited until today to purchase a Dell laptop so I could get it with Windows 7. I couldn't wait to get online to put in my order, but when I did, I noticed the laptop I wanted, the Vostro A860, does NOT come with Windows 7, although the more expensive Vostro 1520 does. So, I clicked to "chat" with their sales representative and here is how the conversation went:

      ME - Why don't ALL of your Dell Deals come with the new Windows 7???

      DELL REP#1 - Windows 7 isn't even out yet. We are only offering it on some of the systems

      ME - It comes out today - October 22nd - what's the deal?? See: http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20091022/ts_alt_afp/usitcompanycomputersoftwareinter....

      DELL REP#1- yes it is, i thought it was the 21st

      ME - So...if I buy a laptop today, I want Windows 7 on it - is that possible??

      DELL REP#1 - we will get it on when they get the drivers working with the components - Have I addressed all your questions or concerns?

      DELL REP#1 - if it is offered on that one

      ME - Dude! It isn't on the Vostro A860 I was looking at, but it is offered for the more expensive Vostro 1520 - obviously it isn't a matter of "drivers working with components" - what is really going on here??

      DELL REP#1 - let me get you to my vostro specialist

      DELL REP #2 - our promotions differ from time to time. Is there anything else i can help you with? well you can verify by clicking on customize, then check the operating system

      ME - Yes - tell me I can purchase the Vostro A860 advertised here with Windows 7 for no extra charge

      DELL REP #2 - The vostro A860 , doesn’t have a built in webcam, and is limited to 2gb memory, I recommend you go for the Inspiron 15, memory up to 4gb, and has a built in webcam

      ME - Duh - it's more expensive - please quit jacking me around and tell me if you can offer me what I just asked for - the Vostro A860 with Windows 7 for no extra charge.

      DELL REP#2 - we dont have that option. Thank you for choosing Dell and Have great day! [REP#2 ENDED "CHAT" ABRUPTLY]

      So, even though my friend recommended Dell, unless something changes, I AIN'T BUYIN' A DELL!! How about you?
