Could "Gay Tony" improve the depiction of LGBT in video games?

Rockstar debuted the trailer for the newest installment in the GTA series, Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony, for the Xbox 360.

    • Until a character's nonheteronormative characteristics aren't advertised as a key part of his character, whether or not stereotypes are abused, there isn't much progress. The video game world is one of the last popular bastions of psuedo-machismo, where senseless acts of aggression can be safely played out from one's seat with no repercussions and full mental satisfaction. Equal rights doesn't fit in that male posturing crap. Plus a video game's name isn't much to go on. But I guess we'll see.

    • While I think this is a step forward, there might be a backlash and anti-gay people might start saying gays are all criminals or mobsters or gangsters, like they say gays are all pedophiles. We need LGBT characters in video games who aren't criminals too.

    • I think the gaming community broadening the way in which they've depicted gay characters will be a good step forward, especially from such an established game series as GTA. Even if it is at the most base level of people playing it and thinking "hey this dude is gay, but this game rocks", people may make the positive correlation between enjoyment and the homosexual theme. That's not to say it's going to indoctrine them into homosexuality (really, that argument is a crock and you know it), but just the possitive association alone is a good thing, in my view.
