With new GPS devices, Hikers taking more risks

Rescue services are complaining that a new generation of GPS tracking devices are leading hikers and trackers to take risks they are unprepared for. Matt Scharper, who coordinates Search and Rescue operations for the state of California, offers his insight.

    • Some people should never leave the city. Even more people should never leave there house. I see people all the time out in the Bays that have no business being out on the water. Most have no idea how to run a boat or who has the right of way. I have been so close to getting run over by powerboats a couple of times. I think they believe it's funny to swamp us Kayakers.

    • He's right - these people are irresponsible if they think that just because they have this location device that they are guaranteed a perfect hike experience, especially if they are going to do more than they can handle.

      If it's just like the 911 telephone line, it should be treated as such - if you activate it for a non-emergency, you should have to pay for the resources used to find your stupid self.
