There is still a lot of scareware out there, and many people still falling for it. Forty-three million in the last year according to Symantec. Put simply, scareware programs are designed to frighten people into running malicious software by popping up when the user is online and declaring that viruses have been detected…

    • Also...

At the top right of the site where this article is published (Information-Security-Resources.com) is a tool from Symantec called "Norton Safe Web" - you can enter a URL for a website and the tool will scan the site for malware, phishing, viruses, and other rogue elements and it gives you a nice little report.

I have this in my toolbar to check any unknown site before visiting. Works on Tiny URLs too.

      Surf safe friends!

    • But...

There are good free antivirus and antispyware tools out there.

On the site where this article is published is a free spyware download called "SuperAntiSpyware" - other good free tools include "AdAware SE" and "Spybot Search and Destroy".

I use all three with my Norton Suite (paid for) and the McAfee tools that Comcast provides.

It's like suspenders and a belt - and a bungee cord.

    • Why would a pop-up on a website scan you computer and give you a "friendly" warning that there are Viruses and Spyware on your computer?
Because the pop-up's creator is doing it out of the kindness of their heart?

      Bulls**t

People, no matter how "good" they are don't do ANYTHING for nothing. Even people doing good deeds do it for something. (Mainly the warm fuzzy feeling they get after doing it)
So......DON'T TRUST POP-UP'S THAT SAY YOU HAVE VIRUSES &/OR SPYWARE ON YOUR COMPUTER!!!
