Once you have access to all email and phone communications, you can begin to look for patterns and keywords for terrorist activities. You can then also look for patterns for people conspiring to do any crime. You can also look for patterns to figure out when someone is going to be unfaithful in their marriage. You will know where anyone, friend or enemy, will be or plans to be. You can then also look for patterns to suggest which hot company is about to have a IPO and use that to your advantage. Once you control the information you can change it to your will. Any terrorist, foreign or domestic, could get in that database and modify entries in a enemies profile just so they would be flagged as a terrorist or worse. Having been a computer system administrator, I watched first hand a hacker modify someones actual email messages while they were on someone's machine. They changed messages a person already received to make it appear that person was guilty of a crime. The hacker was setting up a co-worker and I watched it happen. That poor coworker had email that would have proven him innocent of a crime yet the hacker changed it. Why the hacker did this was not 100% clear, other than he was setting the innocent co-worker up, so the hacker can commit crimes and have a patsy.
There is no logical reason for the government to have a storage facility of this size, for the reasons they say. The potential for shenanigans outweighs the potential good by about megabyte to 1.
Ever hear of 'the Bible Codes'? Its where you take a segment of the bible, from it's original language, and translate it while looking for new English words. It has been said that when certain words appear in the same section (crossword puzzle style) they are predicting the future. Whatever you may believe about the bible codes isnt the issue. the issue is, with enough time and resources you can find patterns attributed to whatever information you are looking for.http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/84/Code_de_la_Bible.png
People are also applying 'Bible Code' logic to other classic works of literature and are finding amazing future prophecies that have come to pass. True or not, with enough space, time and information; the laws of probability change dramatically.
Just because you have not eaten meat for 20 years, does not mean you are a 100% vegetarian. if you are 60 years old, you have eaten meat for 40 more years. We no longer are bound by the limits of space, as in physical size, when dealing with information. 20 years ago we could not have fit the library of Congress in our house. Then we were able to put its content spread out on several dvd's. Now you can view its entire contents thanks to the internet. We are able to search for exactly what we are looking for. With enough time one could find any pattern they want.Granted, we live in this era of Google-Everything so the genie is already out of the bottle. Google will probably be the real life 'Skynet' and become self-aware. They are at the point where they are predicting what the following days trends will be. And they are getting extremely accurate. Predicting the future is just around the corner. What person, company or government would not want to know what stocks or commodities will be hot the following day with 99.9% accuracy? Or have the means to change it? Remember in 2006 when Google's stock price suddenly dropped $38 when it was just at $350? Computer error they said. Never once did something like that happen on the stock market before. It has since happened a few more times, yet only appears to effect Google....
Then again, the NSA Yottabyte W.O.P.R. system may just be Google 2.0, since Google could already be a shadow branch of the NSA as it is thanks to the Patriot act.
*W.O.P.R. is a reference to the mega computer system from the movie "War Games".
