Space hotel on schedule to open in 2012

A company behind plans to open the first hotel in space says it is on target to accept its first paying guests in 2012 despite critics questioning the investment and time frame for the multi-billion dollar project.

The Barcelona-based architects of The Galactic Suite Space Resort say it will cost $4.4 million for a three-night stay at the hotel, with this price including an eight-week training course on a tropical island.

During their stay, guests would see the sun rise 15 times a day and travel around the world every 80 minutes...

    • So uhh... where do you sign up to be a housekeeper? I'd like an application, please. 4.4 million dollars - you'd expect someone to make the bed for you!

    • People who succeed in raking in the biggest piles of other people's money have a deepseated NEED to spend that money in new ways no one else can it justifies their lives. Space has to remain out of most everybody's reach.

    • All this rubbish saying 'this money could be used to cure poverty' or 'this is unfair' or as you americans are obsessed 'they get their money from taxes'.

Be quiet will you. It is their money, it is for them to decide what they invest in. If you had 800k to build a fancy house no one would complain... but nonono... you guys get all mad when someone with more money than you does something like this.

      Stop whining. It's their money.

true it's their money, but they only have it from scrounging of the hard working backs of others, there's only a certain amount of money in circulation, and when a few people have most of that, it leaves hardly any for the rest of us.

Your making it sound like they have stolen food from your plate. They do their jobs, we do ours. They started from nothing and worked their way up. It's up to us if we follow the same path.

    • Can't stop progress, apparently there's alot of money out here looking for a place to be, no point in worring about all the people who desperately need assistance here on Earth. Maybe they should use it to pay off some of the US debt.

If you put a 15% tax on All Business Profits that was dedicated to ending Poverty you would do something. If people profit from shady dealings like lobbyists, or old technologies like crude oil, they would still have to pay something towards Helping the Poor. But the trick would be #1 getting everybody to agree to it because #2 no one would agree who would be the tax administrator to properly #3 apportion out the money.

It's worse than than the Kobayashi Maru.

    • If you have +4 million dollars to blow on a three day hotel stay then good for you. With $4.4 million dollars I could easily travel every remote corner of the world comfortably for the next 70 years.

That's exactly what they're thinking, and they're doing it for themselves with everybody's tax money. We get to stay behind but, not exactly a loss if all our enemies leave. Remember, they're the ones orchestrating the end of earth to start with. Obviously they have some mental problems we need to get out of the gene pool.

They want to be free of us we want to be free of them. But in their absence if we fix the planet they would see it all fixed and return to claim it. Hmm, i think we're just plain destined to be screwed looks like. Maybe Jesus will do something because we sure can't.

    • The Earth has to have the Moon, but the Moon doesn't have to have the Earth. When all us "stupid earthlings" watching all our money going "out that way" ~receiving a few trinkets back like a microwave oven~ you have to gasp in Shock & Awe how stupid we are. A motel in Space is a nice jump to the Moon. The Moon being 1/6 the size of Earth is gobs more likely to survive passage through the 2012 meteor field we are about to enter.

Does the phrase "we're being set up" have any meaning to ya?

    • If you look at Virginia's economy and hear them slashing the Budget (and so on & so forth) they'll have you crying in your soup but I bet that new Spaceport the Richmond legislators are building off the east coast hasn't stopped. They find the money for the projects they want. They divide the taxpayer's money up however they feel it needs to go it's their JOB. They have a MANDATE. It's their RESPONSIBILITY to make sure nothing stops the Future from happening (the Future they decide is the correct timeline).

    • If any one want to argue almost all human life is a waste of time and money. This is an extreme idea yes. can not afford to travel to space for vacation, but its kind of cool to see something like this being done. The priciples behind things likespace colonies and civilian space exploration will be based of things like this. It is a necessary and logical start. World hunger and poverty will never end because people in power dont want it to. Things of that nature should have no bearing on this space hotel.

    • of all our future developments and possibilities, all that space travel and living is all so weird and unnatural to me. i'd rather find some far away tropical or hidden forest place on earth if i had that much money.

we need to clean this natural world to make people realize that there are plenty of beautiful reasons to not go to space for leisure.

    • They better hurry because in 2012 when the world ends they better be up on the space hotel if they want to be saved. MAYBE? Ask the Mayan's and the people that believe their proverbs? This might be a great idea, but who would want to be alive when everyone else is dead. NOT ME! THAT'S FOR SURE!

I can't believe nobody is excited about this. Naturally it's a waste of resources but who cares? People are the greatest product of the earth. We can do what we want with the feces around us and I for one am happy that we are starting to buzz around the hive more.

    • hmm...

I was kinda expecting a more epic-looking station for a hotel, not this space-dandillion. Lame! :P

Also, when (probably not in our own lifetimes) we do have space stations that can permanently fit up to hundreds of people, what will the government be like? Will it be its own kind of "nation" not on Earth? Will it be an "non-Earth" state/province of the nation that built it?

I'm curious to see how this'll all play out years from now.

    • A rocket scientist explained to me what he calls the "Technicolor Cough", a phenomena which occurs in novice space travelers where for the first three or so days in space one is overcome with nausea (and probably vomiting) because the gel in your inner ear (that signals to your brain the body's orientation to the ground) goes haywire from the lack of gravity.
People who are accustom to vertigo may not have this problem, but I would definitely take some edible medical mj with me otherwise I might not fully enjoy my 4 million dollar investment.

you are right, how can they pretend to do all that in less than 3 years?, they are not showing images of the actual platform or getting in depth into the training subject. They had their idea out and now they r just waiting for some billionaire obssesed with 2012 events and get it done by then! ha!
I think is a great concept though and Barcelona is one of the European capitals for innovative ideas and design so I hope they can at least get funding to make it happen, but I strongly doubt is gonna happen by when they r planning to.

You're right J, but isn't this country about the money first? consumer second?! I see a lot of props on this space hotel before the launch and poof, gone like the wind...

So, i'm going to do the same... I'm building an Ocean Hotel, right outside the New Jersey shores. For only $2.2 million, you will get a view of Flipper once a day, the sun and the moon! your own private Deluxe boat (Just in case you and your partner can't stand each other after 3 days) and a life size ex Pres George Bush doll, to kick, punch and play with every day!!!

Any takers? I'm accepting checks and credit cards only! by 2012...

"Why would you spend millions of dollars to stay in space for a few days, when there are people suffering from starvation, war, famine, etc. and dying everyday because of extreme poverty?"

Because people can do what they want with their own money. Plain and simple. Kinda makes sense doesn't it?

these rich people wouldnt have their money if there wern't war, famine and starvation.
there is only a certain amount of money in circulation, if people wern't poor, dying of starvation and disease, then we probably wouldnt have as many rich people in the world.

If space travel is not important, then isn't NASA's entire budget worthless in that regard? Most would argue it is for technological advancment, and I'm glad some rich smuck is going to get really sick going to space so that eventually tax payers won't be footing the bill for "advancment", which is just code for "being better than everybody else in the world".

    • Kari_Heaberlin:

Kari_Heaberlin still makes a good point, because this sort of thing starts snowballing into the neverending situation we see now, where the poor and starving have to remain poor and starving. It becomes a stream of money that could stop the starving just directed somewhere else.

Shouldn't the wealth of a world have to go some toward repairing the world? To many people that sounds wrong, but is it?, because the nature of money is that there's only so much around at any given time... so when it goes toward a few $$$$$ projects like this one it's pulling money away from helping the world that made it possible that has ultimately came out of the poor people's available helps.

I had an interesting thing happen when in the 7th Grade. I had paid for a school trip to visit Williamsburg Va with my History class. Not too many days before the trip my Dad attempted suicide, so they gave me the option to cancel and get all my money back. We didn't have a lot and we could have used the money back, but Mom insisted "it will be good for you to go".

I caved and went, but on the 2nd day both my hands swelled up real large. People should take care of business first, then enjoy extras.
