What if Earth had Rings

This animation was done by Roy Prol, and it shows not only how the rings would look from space, but also the view Earthlings would have of the rings. Prol says the ring views from Earth's surface were created according to the location's latitude and the viewer's orientation, and that the size of the rings was calculated respecting the Roche limit for the Earth. A very intriguing concept, and the video is very well done.

Its called speculative fiction, science fiction, modeling, Parageography, and art;
none of which needs to justify itself as worthy. No,... It is not inherently morally, spiritually or culturally superior to appreciate a "rock" found in nature, rather than to paint a still life of one, photograph it,....or simply imagine variations of "rock" and "rockness" in ones mind. - 2 years ago

That's incredible interesting, ras_menelik! I wonder why that theory isn't discussed more.
I wonder how religion and spirituality would be different if rings existed throughout the quasi-cultural development of humans. - 2 years ago

Not What? When!
The earth's ring
The most profound climatic event of the Tertiary was the terminal Eocene event 34 million years ago. The sudden change in the abundance of forest plants suggests that the winters became much more severe while the summers remained about the same. At about the same time, the radiolaria were devastated by some sort of disaster. This was also the time when the North American tektite strewn field was deposited -- a field that stretches halfway around the world. John O'Keefe hypothesizes that some of the tektites and micro-tektites that rained down during this period missed the earth and went into orbit around it, forming an opaque Saturn-like ring. This ring might have lasted a million years or more; and its shadow could have caused the extra-severe winters postulated from botanical data.

Earth already has metal, nuts, bolts, plastic, spent fuel and 2,271 satellites in its orbit.
And judging by our cleanup efforts down here,... I don't see us cleaning up our space junkyard any time soon.
So one day soon,... Earth WILL have an equatorial ring of OUR garbage.

If people spent more time concentrating on what is instead of what if the Earth as it is now might be a better place to live.

Oh Jan, why always so negative?
This is no different than Erotic Poetry, or a Weekly Inspiration. It's called ART, please try to see the good side of life. It can be very beneficial. :)

JanforGore:
What Jan means is actually, you see, the good side of life. This video represents the beauty of human potential but the nice little euphoria most people probably feel (myself included no doubt, excellent video) experiencing this creativity does far less good than appreciating moment by moment everything for what it is. And never wanting more, otherwise the realm you take your psyche too is just an illusion that breeds sorrow. It's far from negative once the realization hits. :)

Thank you. And also Pjacobs, if I were so "negative" I wouldn't have started the Erotic Poetry Group. Just because I don't agree with something on one of your posts doesn't make me negative about life. Seeing the ART and beauty in Earthy as it is even with all of its faults and concetrating on making it better IS positive.

Yeah rings! And, and laser beams like peeu, peeu, peeu. Then a big battling ram with spikes. And ten legs with, with triceratops horns. That would be so cool no other planet would ever fuck with us then! I have illustrations in my notebook if you want to see them!

Well, with all the 'space junk' orbiting the planet we could probably have rings if somehow managed to move into the 'right' place.
