"Obama Fried Chicken" Sign Cut from Rap Video

A recently released music video for "Popular Demand" by the Clipse featured the awning of the infamous Obama Fried Chicken joint in Brownsville, Brooklyn. But in comparing versions of the video airing on MTV and elsewhere, it looks like the TV channel completely erased the restaurant's name from the awning in the video's opening shot.

Back in April, City Councilman Charles Barron led a protest outside the location with citizens "outraged by [the] racist connection to Barack Obama and fried chicken."

The restaurant manager fired back and said it was a tribute to the president, noting four out of five customers support the name.

Update: A spokesperson for MTV says, "MTV did not ask for that edit to be made. Someone else other than MTV made the request." When asked who that may have been, they simply said, "We have no idea."

Check out the 2 versions

Was it Big Brother who made the request? The White House can't promote censorship under the guise of "racist" and "terrorist" labels forever.

    • They could have at least left in the Fried Chicken part and got rid of the Obama part instead getting rid of the whole name and just having an empty yellow space.

I beg to differ, the yanks are just as biggoted, they are just less blatant. I have a friend who is a prestigeous doctor with a strong latin accent. He was in New York a year ago and they did everthing, but refuse him service in a very ritzy restaurant. The race issue is actually more polarized now then ever.

    • If the person being spoken of would not have been elevated to such an unrealistic level, none of this would be news. You put yourself in the spotlight you gotta roll with the punches. Somebody needs to man up and evidently music television got no backbone! PC anyone, didnt that crap end in the 90s? They were not at the playground, they dont have to play nice! I smell crap because thats what you get when you have your head shoved up someones arse!

    • More than likely the owner was trying to capitalize on the name or pay homage like he said and wasn't trying to be racist. I mean is anyone really dumb enough to go into Brooklyn and put in a racist fast food restaraunt?

I see why it was removed from the video, because if it wasn't taken out the controversy would have been much worse. Being accused of removing it intentionally is much better than being accused of putting it in their intentionally.
